Ghosn’s Escape Followed Weeks of Planning

Carlos Ghosn’s escape to Lebanon from Japan followed weeks of planning by associates aimed at getting the former auto executive to a country they believed would provide a more friendly legal environment to try the claims of financial wrongdoing against him, according to people familiar with the matter.

Last weekend, a team assembled to carry out his exfiltration sprung the plan into action with the aid of accomplices in Japan, one of these people said. Mr. Ghosn was spirited from his court-monitored residence in Tokyo onto a private jet, bound for Turkey. Mr. Ghosn then continued by plane to Lebanon, landing there early Monday morning, according to people familiar with the matter. There, he met his wife, Carole Ghosn, who played a major role in the operation, these people said.

In a text message to The Wall Street Journal, Mrs. Ghosn described being reunited with her husband as the “best gift of my life.”

Flight-tracking data details only one journey that matches Mr. Ghosn’s movements between Japan and Lebanon. A long-range Bombardier business jet left Kansai International Airport near Osaka—about a six-hour drive west from Tokyo—on Sunday at 11:10 p.m. Traversing Russian airspace, the plane arrived Monday morning at Ataturk Airport in Istanbul, according to flight-tracking data. A smaller jet operated by the same company, Turkey-based MNG Jet Havacılık AS, left the airport for Beirut just over half an hour later, the data show.

Mr. Ghosn entered Lebanon with a French passport and a Lebanese identification card, according to a person familiar with the matter. Officials in Beirut on Tuesday said he arrived in the country legally and authorities wouldn’t take any action against him.

Mr. Ghosn now faces the prospect of an extended stay in Lebanon, should Japan decide to pursue an international arrest warrant. Lebanon doesn’t have an extradition treaty with Japan.

Amazing...I can’t image all the hard work and attention to detail that went into formulating his escape. All without any hint of it getting to the Japanese authorities. Wow. Well executed.

I assume he's guilty of violating the law in Japan. Japan isn't known as a country that persecutes people for things like this, in fact, quite the opposite.

So while I share your admiration for a well-executed escape, it's still a crook getting away from the cops, and that's not something to celebrate.

I can tell you right now that if Ghosn was Japanese and did the same thing, he would have never set a foot in jail. Nissan did this to get rid of him.

Wouldn’t surprise me if the Japanese legal authorities just sorta looked-the-other-way. If their prosecutors started turning up embarrassing information they might have re-thought the wisdom of a trial.

Thanks. Everything I’ve read said he was railroaded and certainly would not get a fair trial in the Japanese judicial system.

Haven’t you even begun to notice how corrupt everything everywhere is? Please, do not EVER assume anyone is guilty.

And please don’t serve on any juries until you understand the concept of presumption of innocence, and guilty beyond reasonable doubt.

If I help someone jump bail, doesn't that implicate me in a felony?

If I use my private jet, can they sieze it?

Not sure myself.

He was on bail and so, not a fugitive.

Technically he hasn’t jumped bail until he fails to appear in court at the required time.

He wasn’t under house arrest and was permitted to move about inside Japan.

He has violated the terms of the bail agreement.

So, maybe those assisting in his getting out of the country are not in hot water, yet.

The real issue is Nissan knew Ghosn’s financials and looked the other way until he became troublesome, after which they nuked him.

I’ve had to translate corporate litigation discovery of emails, etc. before and all Japanese execs hide funds just like Ghosn did.

didn't start out thinking everything was pristine. Corruption is just part of the system.

Please, do not EVER assume anyone is guilty.

Realistically, I do it all the time. And I bet you do too. I just published a list (on my FR profile page) of Obama administration people who I believe are guilty. Sure, I could be wrong.

I favor trials, which again aren't perfect, but are about as good as we've been able to come up with to prove guilt or innocence. But of course, there are problems with them too, especially when you have things like the FBI threatening people with going after their family, as they supposedly did with General Flynn.

And please don’t serve on any juries until you understand the concept of presumption of innocence, and guilty beyond reasonable doubt.

Is Free Republic a jury room? You think you know what I do or don't understand about reasonable doubt?

Grow up and stop lecturing people you barely know, it's not a good look.

It’d be interesting to find out whether Ghosn is actually guilty of the crimes he was charged with in Japan. It’s very difficult to believe that Japanese industry would try to frame Ghosn - as it is, the negative publicity is going to damage efforts to attract foreign executives. OTOH, those are very insular corporate cultures that might not appreciate decisions being made by an outsider trying to force mergers with non-Japanese corporations.

The problem with financial accounting principles and tax law at this level is that a jury is totally incapable of understanding what is being talked about in th trial.

If the defendant chooses a trial by judge the same litterlay is also true.

It comes down to how convincing the defense attorney is to the judge or jury.

I honestly don’t follow this story but it is clear to me Japan went after him for being a foreigner leading a Japanese company in Japan. He maybe guilty of all he is charged with but I bet he is doing what all Japanese execs do but the system looks the other way when the native Japanese do this and they crack down on the non Japanese.
