Queen’s Roger Taylor made OBE in New Year Honours list
NME ^ | December 28, 2019 | Will Lavin

Queen‘s Roger Taylor has been made an OBE in the New Year Honours list.

The list, which was drawn up and approved during Theresa May’s premiership, rewards a lineup of well-known figures from the worlds of art and sport. But the vast majority (72%) of the 1,097 to be recognised were people who work in their communities.

Taylor, best known as the drummer of Queen, has campaigned for the awareness of Aids, launched a musical featuring Queen’s greatest hits and is one of the few living people to appear on a Royal Mail stamp.

The 70-year-old multi-instrumentalist, born in King’s Lynn, Norfolk, played drums in Smile, the precursor to Queen founded by Brian May, and helped write Queen’s number one songs ‘These Are The Days Of Our Lives’, ‘Innuendo’ and ‘Under Pressure’, as well as contributing to major hits such as ‘Radio Ga Ga’ and ‘A Kind Of Magic’.

In 1970, the same year Smile revamped as Queen, Taylor turned down the chance to become drummer for Genesis, allowing Phil Collins to join instead.

He was the first Queen member to go solo with his 1977 song ‘I Wanna Testify’, before releasing a string of albums.

Causing controversy in 1999, Taylor is also one of the few living people to appear on a Royal Mail stamp. He was visible playing drums behind frontman Freddie Mercury in an image of the pair on stage, which was issued as part of a Great Britons series.

At that point it was understood that only members of the Royal Family were allowed to appear on stamps while still living.

Following Mercury’s death in 1991 of bronchial pneumonia resulting from Aids, at the age of 45, Taylor began to promote awareness of the disease worldwide.

Not only was Roger the drummer, but his upper-register backing vox was arguably as key to Queen's sound as was Michael Anthony's backing vocals to Van Halen. Furthermore, Queen was a rare band insofar as each member was a decent songwriter - to that point, Roger's catalog includes songs that don't suck such as Sheer Heart Attack (wherein he sings lead and plays all instruments except for Brian May's lead guitar licks), Radio Ga Ga (which helped Queen steal the show at Live Aid 1985), and I'm in Love with my Car, which, because it was the B-side to Bohemian Rhapsody (due to Roger's antics to make it so), it generated an equal amount of publishing royalties for Taylor as the main single did for Mercury.

Rock It wasn’t too shabby either.

Deacon had more than enough talent to be big on his own. Need Your Loving and Another One Bites The Dust are his, among others.

It’s hard to get your songs in with guys like Mercury and May in the band but they were a more collaborative band than most.

Told my girl I had to forget her, had to buy me a new carburetor... :)

I'd never heard of it either.

Like a CBE, an OBE is an order of the British Empire award. It is the second highest ranking Order of the British Empire award, behind CBE but ahead of MBE. It stands for Officer of the Order of the British Empire (as opposed to Commander for a CBE and Member for an MBE).

IILWMC is my second favorite off A Night At The Opera, with #1 being Death on Two Legs. I believe Another One Bites the Dust was Queen's best-selling single. Not too bad for a rhythm section.

I have to admit that while Roger Taylor is a good drummer, he isn't one of my top 20 drummers. That said, if you take him out of Queen, you'd have no Queen. He's also eminently more likable than the late Ginger Baker, and he's still alive unlike Moon and Bonham. Congratulations to him and his family.

Keith Richards on Mick Jagger being knighted: “Mick should have held out for a lordship.”

Gotta love Keith.

It’s a wonder that he hasn’t gone partially deaf, sitting in the eye of that noisy storm for so long.

Roger studied to be a dentist for a while, starting in 1967, at London Hospital Medical College. He soon became bored with it, and changed his major to biology at East London Polytech.

In 1970, Roger turned down the chance to be drummer for Genesis, which led to Phil Collins joining instead.

Well put.

Was the fin on your back part of the deal....shark.

It was about their (ex I assume) agent.

Adam Lambert is talented.

But it’s impossible to replace Freddy.

I’m a huge fan of his own indie work from the 80s, but the guy is an insufferable, depressed, angry lefty.

So when (or how, maybe we need King William) does Jimmy Page (also an OBE) get promoted to Knight and be called Sir.

Can someone explain the MBE, OBE, CBE, and Sir titles?

Then we can call him Sir Jimmy F-ing Page!
