his is a NO POLITICS initial analysis of today's murders in a church in White Settlement, Texas. It is meant to educate in technical and tactical applications of church safety for all houses of worship. This educational analysis is not meant to be critical of people other than the murderer.

I’m no expert, but I think you are asking all the right questions. The poor guy who was shot while drawing his weapon had no chance against a shotgun, he had a little over 3 seconds to stop the threat. The killshot was amazing and obviously very fortunate, but you don’t want to rely on a 15 yard head shot, especially after two men are already killed.
It is good that the outcome wasn’t worse, to be sure. But the day has passed where even churches can allow free and open access. It might be offensive to some to think about screening or metal detectors in churches but ask the families of the two men who died what they think.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported that church elder Mike Tinius said the gunman had drawn the suspicion of church security shortly before the shooting.
Major error. Should have told him to keep his hands where they could be seen if they realized something was wrong (trench coat and backpack a dead giveaway) and then called the police.

Excellent points. It is one thing to carry in general, prepared for a close quarters encounter. You’re right though, when attending a specific event we should consider likely scenarios. Most of us probably don’t make distinctions beyond home/vehicle/ person.

It was legalized in Texas recently and of course Joe Biden condemned that.
He certainly seemed bundled up and self-contained (backpack, body wrapped) for someone at a bright and shiny church service.
He looks like Judd Nelson in The Breakfast Club. Someone sitting off to the side, with a “leave me alone” trench coat look.
Most people go to a church to be a part of a community even if they don’t know those seated to their right or left. They are still encouraged to reach out, shake hands, and say hello.
