The owner of the helicopter company reached out to the Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Honolulu when the aircraft didnt return from a tour of the Napali coast, the Coast Guard previously said. One pilot and six passengers were on the helicopter and two of those passengers are believed to be minors.
The last communication came around 4:40 p.m. local time, Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Sara Muir told CNN Friday, about 40 minutes before the helicopter was due to return. At that time it was leaving Waimeia Canyon, Muir said.
Muir identified the helicopter company as Safari Helicopters. When reached by CNN, Safari Helicopters confirmed its helicopter was missing but wouldnt provide additional details.
The aircraft is equipped with an electronic locator, Muir said, but officials havent received any signal from it.

I go to Hawaii every year and for this reason always wonder why people go on those helicopter tours. I just don’t trust the quality control on all levels.
Prayers for these folks.
You can see Waimeia Canyon plenty good from the road.
Took the second Mrs. Lurkin to Kuai for our 25th anniversary, and we rode in a helicopter tour up the Napali Coast and then down into an extinct volcano.
It was beautiful, but being over the water in that thing was more than a bit scary.
add Alaska to that list too. I’m a pilot and I jumped on board for a glacier tour. The guy scared the crap out of me climbing out on a ice slope hanging on the prop with 10 souls on board... Never again.
So true. You can bet the maintenance of those helicopters are done on an infrequent basis. I would avoid small plane and helicopter tours period!
I went on one last year and it was awesome. Even flew over Waimeia Canyon.
They don’t glide very well...............
Helicopter ride? Just say no.
Taking a minor on one is child abuse.
Unless life is on the line or it’s a case of military necessity, getting on a helicopter is an act so idiotic as to approach evil.
Is that where they filmed the helicopter landing in Jurassic Park?
Which dead passenger will have a connection to the Clintons?
...It was beautiful, but being over the water in that thing was more than a bit scary.
I rode one over the active volcano on the Big Island
Looked straight down on the very active caldera
Never again...
Helicopters autorotate which is similar to a glide.
Yikes!

That’s just plain dumb, and I can say that as a chopper pilot.
But da kine is hard to spell!
It's a tour of Kauai that includes Waimea Canyon.
Over the ocean it makes not much difference...............
Not after New Zealand, anyways..............
