A mysterious greenish liquid that forced lane closures after it seeped onto a Michigan interstate Friday allegedly came from a closed electroplating business whose owner is currently serving a year in federal prison for operating an unlicensed hazardous waste storage facility.
Federal agencies had been called to investigate the strange oozing liquid pouring onto I-696 in Madison Heights a suburb of Detroit which they found to be the chemical hexavalent chromium, Michigan State Police said on Twitter on Saturday. [ ]
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) said in a statement that crews had spent Friday night vacuuming the sewers and basement of Electro-Plating Services, where the green liquid was found. [ ]
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) says hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] is one of the valence states of the element chromium, which is usually produced by an industrial process. They said it is known to cause cancer and can be used as pigments in dyes paints, inks, and plastics or as an anticorrosive agent added to paints primers or other surface coatings.

I bet it wasn’t found by workers out fixing the roads because....well....it just ain’t happening in Michigan.
What is this “fixing roads” thing you speak of?
I understand that the government, EPA knew this stuff was in that building for years and did nothing until it leaked out of the building and onto a public highway?
Another great job by the EPA
This is a job for Toxic Avenger!
The only super hero from New Jersey!
Hey, the EPA was busy causing a mine leak and river contamination for all that time.

Damn I tell ya I love when a comment causes me to burst out laughing.
Green ooze? Maybe it’s time to call Ghostbusters.
Sorry, at my age, I should know better than to eat at Taco Bell.
Here’s Trump trashing Granholm II at the Battle Creek rally.

The EPA didn’t do crap against democrats... My guess is the polluter was a democrat and was giving a pass by the EPA.
So they thought his business was enough of a dangerous toxic waste site to lock him up, but not dangerous enough to clean it up or even monitor it.
I would say the State is responsible at this point.
The EPA is a political money machine.
They’d rather litigate for years, trying to force a company to pay an excessive fine, in addition to the cleanup, even on “very old” hazardous waste, pre-EPA, rather than getting the stuff cleaned up much sooner with a modest fine.
“I understand that the government, EPA knew this stuff was in that building for years and did nothing until it leaked out of the building and onto a public highway?”
I understand you have a misunderstanding.
I’ve worked around hexavalent Cr2O3. Had an allergic reaction after a while. It accretes in the body and raises hell. Good stuff to avoid.

When do we get our t-shirts that say Lab Rat?.
Are you in Michigan? ...the roads here do suck but they’re ALWAYS under construction. I can barely go anywhere without dealing with lane closures causing congestion.
...seems like institutional corruption imo....create bad roads so you always have contracts for rebuilding them.
Sounds eerily similar to NY “road departments”.
If lanes aren’t closed for “construction”, then you have giant gopher holes in the roads eating any vehicle that comes near.
Reporting said gopher activity gets a lackluster response from the “road department” in jurisdiction of the area you’re telling them about.
Green stuff? Michigan must use ground up Taxpayer Money to pave their roads.
Either that or Soylent Green that didn’t pass Quality Control Standards making it safe for Human Consumption.
The owner was already in jail for operating a hazardous waste storage facility, illegal I’m guessing. Sounds like they jailed the owner and left the chemicals in the building.
