Ed Smart, the father of kidnapping victim Elizabeth Smart, has shared how difficult it was to come to terms with his sexuality in a new interview.
The 64-year-old Smart, who came out as gay in August, told CBS This Morning that he struggled to accept himself after a lifetime of believing that being attracted to men was not acceptable.
I was praying that I was not [gay]. I didnt want to believe that I was, Smart said. But how do you cure being gay? There is no cure. And for all of those out there that are struggling in the same spot, there is no cure.
Smart came out in a letter posted to his Facebook in August, in which he detailed that he was in the process of divorcing his wife of 34 years, Lois. Smart added that he was no longer comfortable being a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, commonly known as the Mormon church. While the church announced in April that the children of people in the LGBT community could be baptized without approval from leadership, it still considers same-sex marriage to be a serious transgression and acting on same-sex attractions to be a sin.
Speaking with CBS This Mornings Gayle King in an interview airing in parts this week, Smart said he spoke with church leaders while trying to figure out his feelings.
I literally called my bishop up one morning, and I said, You know, I feel like Ive stabbed Lois in the heart,' Smart said. And I went to my other church leader, and I said to him, So am I gay? Am I gay? And he said to me, I dont think so. He said, You know, theres this spectrum.'

I guess he feels like he missed out all his life and doesn’t want to die without experiencing what truly arouses him. You might think a 60 y.o. could just let the fires burn low, but men and women of that age have thrown their old life and vows away before this.
I can recall back when Elizabeth was missing and Ed was on the news all the time that he would constantly set my gaydar off. Always just assumed my gaydar was faulty since Ed obviously had himself a beautiful family.
Looks like my gaydar gets the last laugh.
Perhaps its time to re-open the case of Dennis Day. My gaydar says hes queer as a $3 bill even though he had like 12 kids.
I always thought so.
I remember a person from FR saying that years ago.
The wife and I watched a couple of early 30’s Busby Berkeley musicals recently on TCM that featured a young Dick Powell. We both remarked on how gay he seemed and how much he sounded like Dennis Day. Of course, later in his career he ditched musicals and started playing hard boiled guys and didn’t seem gay at all. Dennis didn’t strike me as gay so much as doofusy.
IIRC Dennis Day had like 10 kids.
