A nuclear attack would most likely target one of these 6 US cities — but experts say none of them are prepared

A nuclear attack on US soil would most likely target one of six cities: New York, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, or Washington, DC.

But public-health experts say any of those cities would struggle to provide emergency services to the wounded.

The cities also no longer have designated fallout shelters to protect people from radiation.

Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

The chance that a nuclear bomb would strike a US city is slim, but nuclear experts say it's not out of the question.

A nuclear attack in a large metropolitan area is one of the 15 disaster scenarios for which the US Federal Emergency Management Agency has an emergency strategy. The agency's plan involves deploying first responders, providing immediate shelter for evacuees, and decontaminating victims who have been exposed to radiation.

Easy to prepare. Just get potassium iodide pills. They totally protect you from the bomb.

I have one son in DC and another in NYC.

I had a son in NYC for 9-11. The six hours until we got a call from him was hell.

Seattle will be on the list to close our last nuclear sub base in the Pacific. Who makes these lists.

Well there’s one thing that might be helpful - based on the experience with Hiroshima and Nagasaki, we know that nuclear weapons don’t strike the same place twice.

Can one prepare?

Hear, believe, confess, be baptized and spread the Gospel

If you’ve seen one nuclear war, you’ve seen them all.

That’s why I figure it’s probably propaganda to stir up Democrat voters. They are very calculated over there at Yahoo.

"Can’t say I’d miss 5 out of 6 of those...."

Why do you and others say such things? Was that in jest?

Depends on if you are on the outskirts of the area and next to a major thoroughfare or not.

"All 6 at the same time, they would be doing us a favor."

Another joke, I hope.

At the rate Nancy Pelosi, Adam Schiff, Chuck Schumer and Jerry Nadler are going, they’ll probably wipe out the United States of America.

Or, hopefully, just the Democratic Party.

“How does one sufficiently prepare for a nuclear attack? Hide in a refrigerator?”

It worked for Indiana Jones.

[Try large military bases and harbors first.

Maybe DC as well.]

[How does one sufficiently prepare for a nuclear attack? Hide in a refrigerator?]

It worked for Harrison Ford, as I recall. Just make sure it isn’t one with a locking handle.

~~~
I try hard to suspend judgement when watching and reading fiction, but that was one of the most ridiculous scenes I’ve seen in a movie. I don’t care if you packed Indy into that fridge with foam, gel, and kevlar, he’d have been turned into a puddle of mush and crushed bones the way that fridge got hurled and tumbled.
Also, not to go off on tangeants (but I am), I hate when guys fall from one ledge to another ledge (or bar) and just grab and catch themselves. Think of Die Hard in the elevator shaft, but this action trope has happened a million times. I dare you to fall more than 24” inches and try to grab on to a ledge.
