BERLIN (Reuters) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Wednesday that she opposed U.S. sanctions on companies building the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline because they have extraterritorial effect.
The U.S. Senate on Tuesday passed legislation to slap sanctions on companies building the massive underwater pipeline to bring Russian natural gas to Germany, but it was uncertain whether the measures would slow completion of the project.

America first.
That’s irrefutably true...for an American.
The German has its own perspective. Germany first sounds just right.
Merkel, a proud graduate of the University of Karl Marx.
It is questionable at this point who are a Marx follower in this case. German business is about 95% against US Congress on the issue.
Sucks to be you, Bumdestag.
Why is the United State Senate getting entangled in foreign infrastructure projects? What Russia and Germany do, is between Russia and Germany.
The Iranians certainly think so.
What stake does the United States have in this at all?
Is it going through our territory?
Ask the Poles about that.
The House is generally against anything Trump supports like an LNG facility in Germany to import American natural gas.
US Congress putting unlawful sanctions on Germany (which is a de-facto head of Europe), Russia and China is a big deal. That’s about the whole developed World besides US and it has the economy twice and a half of US.
How much do you think your retirement savings would cost in ten years if these nations would take it serious?
Hope it is not another event with Poland getting on the wrong side of history AGAIN.
None of our business. Populations have energy needs.
So, Merkel is colluding with the Russians, go figure, eh.
Regardless of how one feels about Putin, Russia or the EU’s energy relations with them, Micro-management of foreign countries’ and 3rd Party overseas commercial dealings is bound to fail, hurt American business, and simply make the USA look tyrannical and petty.
Since every Russian business involved is already sanctioned the sanctions are mostly against Germany, Austria and Denmark. And that is over a top infrastructural project supported by the business community and 90% of European population.
So how does this fall under 'America first'?
Allegedly US has a plan to sell own gas to Europe but then NYC has shortage of natural gas existing supply is unable to cover and there is no realistic strategy to supplement even 10% of Russian sales to Germany with US supply in at least 30 years as well.
It makes sense to look into a Democrats’ Ukrainian deals which are about to transit Russian gas to Europe at inflated transit fees before alternative pipelines are finished.
