NASA's X-plane dubbed the 'son of Concorde' is cleared for final assembly ahead of testing in 2021 (TR)

NASA's incredible X-plane that is shaped to muffle the sound of its sonic boom has been cleared for assembly by a management review ahead of test flights in 2021.

Dubbed the 'son of Concorde' after the Mach 2 airliner, the X-59 Quiet SuperSonic Technology (QueSST) is NASA's first large experimental plane in three decades.

The X-59 will cruise at Mach 1.42 (1,090 mph/1,754 km/h) and is designed for supersonic flight while preventing its sonic boom from being heard on the ground.

If successful, the craft could one day travel from London to New York in just over three hours, while transcending objections to supersonic air travel over land.

Probably a SpaceX ballistic shuttle would be faster.

If they can eliminate sonic booms, we may see a return of supersonic travel in the future....and it might be profitable!

If NASA hadn't seen THIS, I wonder what they'd be doing, now.

I wonder if Elon didn't just blast ahead, I wonder what they'd be doing.

WHY do we need NASA...?

I sure wouldn’t mind taking an SST from IAD to LAX.

A new upgrade to FR means you no longer have to truncate titles.

Boom Supersonic is about to unveil the completed XB-1 “Baby Boom” with the same goal.

We are a debtor nation. So when I read about projects like this, I ask myself: Is this project worth saddling my grandchildren with more debt?

In this case, to quote the Magic 8-Ball, it’s very doubtful.

The private sector is already working on this.

If it proves out, it will probably boost US commercial aerospace sales immensely - it would remove the biggest barrier to civilian supersonic transport. From a transport view, the only thing better would be a suborbital transport.

See my post #31.

Lockheed has been losing in this area for decades and now it has the taxpayer to fund its losing.

Yes, but worrying about this is like being a million dollars in debt and deciding not to buy a candy bar on your way to buy another boat.

We spend the equivalent, adjusted for inflation, of the entire 12 year Apollo program on welfare payments — every 99 days. Unless that is dealt with, we are doomed no matter what we do.

WHY do we need NASA...?

To provide jobs for Operation Paperclip Nazis and to launder huge amounts of money for other DS purposes and CIA black ops.

**What will the little Swedish Nazi have to say ?**

Nanzi, Soroz, and the rest of the aging crooks will shut her up. After all, seeing that their lifetimes are close to running out, having the time of their lives on the French Riviera should not be delayed by riding a subsonic private jet.
