After the past few weeks follies by the House, it might be time to get an amendment passed to protect the Executive branch from bogus activities and hold those who perpetuate them accountable for their actions.
Term limits for both houses of congress.
Just say no to term limits. Can you foresee the term limited politicans saying and doing whatthehellever they want or desire?
A better idea is to allow for the recall of Representatives and Senators.
THAT would keep them in line
Probably unnecessary. President Trump has pretty much ignored these misfits and losers, which is a perfectly legitimate response under the U.S. Constitution.
1. Term limits stifle free speach. If I have a good rep and want to continue voting for them, there is NO reason I shouldn't be able to.
2. Conservatives USED to be against term limits. During the Reagan admin, I believe it was.
3. Return public service to what the Founders envisioned - SERVICE - no retirement, no lifetime benefits or medical care, and pay equal to jury duty, and we wouldn't NEED term limits.
4. I DO NOT trust Republicans, in any way, whatsoever, to follow any guidelines set forth for an Article V convention. They already disregard the Constitution on a daily basis. Their eager participation in this travesty that is the impeachment farce is just one example. What makes you think they will follow any guidelines for this? They won't. It will be only a matter of time before backroom deals are cut between left and right, and the ultimate loser will be, once again, we, the People.
Just say no to Article V.
And just how would you do that?
How about having each State pay for their own damn Representatives and Senators, and expenses, as it was in the beginning. Why do I have to pay for Schiff, Pelosi and Schumer, or for that matter, any from California?
Makes perfect sense.
While there are several changes I would like to see in the Constitution, they would be no cure for what is going on with the Democrats today.
Enacting or amending laws is no cure for lawlessness. If people won't obey the laws we have, why would they obey new ones?
To fix lawlessness, cultural and spiritual cures are necessary.
Our first Article Five Convention should target the repeal of the 17th amendment, the direct election of Senators. This is clearly something that needs to be done and I believe is achievable.
Term Limits to 2 terms in the Senate, 4 Terms in the House and 2 terms as President. No person can serve more then 20 years total in Congress, 22 if they are elected President.
House members are considered a GS-13 Step 3, Senators are a GS=15 Step 2. They receive bi-annual step promotions. In other words in the House to get a pay raise you have to be reelected.
They retire under an appropriate GS protocols. Something like, they invest in the appropriate 401K and if they reach 10 years of total service they receive a stipend plus 401K (similar to the military) maybe 1/4 pay based on rolling average of last three years pay. They begin collecting at age 62. If they serve 20 years they receive 1/2 pay plus 401K at age 62. While an elected official they receive the same BHA and per diem a military members gets for the DC area. They get a stipend for hiring staff in DC and only one office in their State or District. They can hire five people as GS-9-12 at each location. Majority and Minority leaders will be paid as an SES, with each allowed an additional 5 staff for their DC office. Any additional staff or office space must be provided by the appropriate State and be voted on annually in the State budget. Those employee are considered State employees and fall under the State retirement and pay plans. This would give the voters some leverage. Congress critters can any roll other federal service into their GS retirement i.e. someone did 6 years in the military and 14 years in Congress they can buy their military time into their GS retirement and retire with 20 years collecting at age 62. This is already the practice for someone with military time working for the NSA or FBI or even the Dept of Interior. They actually have to pay out of their monthly pay checks to have their military time added to their retirement. Presidents receive free health care, 3/4 of pay effective when they leave office, per diem and BHA for the area they live and a government paid for staff not to exceed 5 people.
This may seem too generous, but you want professionals, not professional politicians to work for our interests. Professionals would have to put a career on hold to be a elected representative. It would also incentives them to do what the constituents want or waste years of their financial lives. Remember the gravy train eventful reaches it's final stop and a House member in their 40s and 50s would have to actually go back to work.
Yes I thought of this before. But this is posted for discussion, they are quick thoughts so there may be some issues with this idea, so be kind:)
Note this would apply to any impeachment inquiry, not just impeachment of the President.
“...Conservatives USED to be against term limits. During the Reagan admin, I believe it was ...”
During the Reagan years there were two term limits organizations. Unfortunately they fought each other to be the only term limits organizations more then they fought for term limits. Their main disagreement was over number of terms allowed. My conclusion over this was at least one of the term limits organization was just a money raising scam (Probably both!).
It was a conservative principle in those times. I remember Gingrich & Armey talking about the need for term limits. The GOP leadership gave it at best lukewarm support.
I support limiting consecutive terms - 2 consecutive terms (12 years) in the Senate then must sit out a full term (6 years) before they can return to the Senate, 5 consecutives terms in the House (10 years) then sit out 3 terms (6 years) before they can return to the House. Idea 10 years is roughly the cross over point where the average politician loses the bubble as to who he represents the people back home or his interests. After a 10 year period he needs to go back home and experience his “governance”. If he/she is determined to be a professional politician (A class you seem to support, because no term limits enables it!) then they can go back home & run for governor, mayor, county commissioner, state legislature. (I guess a private sector job is too “hoi polloi” for the average politico!)
My proposal doesn’t require replacing the voting population with majority civic minded people that treat voting as a serious responsibility every generation. If that was possible would have had 36 years of Joe Biden?
Perpetuate and Perpetrate are words that frequently get confused with each other.
Read Article V before pontificating on it.
Apparently, you didn't read the entire post. I most certainly don't support career pols.
Many of our modern tribulations with an out of control national government stem from the 17th. I agree that repeal is doable if the states make the case. Oh, and if PDJT, after his blowout victory next year, calls for a COS.
I have, and as I've said before, they already don't adhere to the Constitution. What makes you think they'd adhere to any guidelines set forth for such a convention? You really trust the GOP that much?
