Troops have been deployed to India's ethnically diverse northeastern states of Assam and Tripura, amid violent protests against the passing of a controversial and far-reaching law that offers a path to Indian citizenship for non-Mulism minorities from three neighboring countries.
The Citizenship Amendment Bill, which was passed by the country's parliament on Wednesday, has been described by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu nationalist government as a means of protecting vulnerable groups from persecution.
Critics, however, say the bill marginalizes Muslims and undermines the country's secular constitution. Others say it risks bringing an unwanted influx of immigrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan into India's northern states. Indigenous groups in both states fear naturalizing large numbers of immigrants will change the region's demographics and way of life. India's northeast is home to more than 200 distinct indigenous minority groups. Both Assam and Tripura share a border with Bangladesh and some see the arrival of foreigners as a cultural threat regardless of religion; for others, anti-immigrant sentiment remains closely tied to religious divisions.
Images from the protests show crowds chanting slogans and holding signs that read, "We are Assamese and proud" and "Tripura is not the dumping ground of illegal migrants."

India has certainly picked a challenging battlefield. While I agree with their reasons, having seen how heavily integrated the muslim community is throughout their major areas, it’s easy to see that this is just the beginning of a massive confrontation between the powers.
I expect we will see more and more brain drain of their finest minds to the USA and not returning, unless the government crushes, and I mean absolutely destroys any and all opposition to this policy.
I don’t give a rat’s ass if it “marginalizes” muslims. What about the laws in muslim countries that marginalizes everyone BUT muslims?

I don’t know about that. My country has excellent relations with the Hindu I Israel. Same bad neighborhood, I suppose.
From what I understand, the main issue some Indians have with Nazarenes is it breaks down the caste system and is a vestige of English occupation.
Muslims did that to themselves. How many non-muslims have they killed in the last 20 years; let alone 150 years.
Or more specifically, “ethnically diverse” = millions of Muslim Bangladeshis who have illegally crossed the border. Modi should build a wall between the two countries.
The essence of the issue of the bill is, and isn’t about a “Muslim identity”.
It is offering amnesty to illegal immigrants from neigboring Muslim majority countries, and it particularly singles out those who are minorities in those countries.
And because of that focus it denies that illegals who are Muslims from those Muslim majority countries, need the protections and legal residency the bill offers to the illegal immigrants who are not Muslim from those countries.
It is saying to places like Pakistan and Bangladesh - you can take care of your own Muslim citizens, but we will accept for legal residence here those who are illegal immigrants from among the minorities in your country.
What the majority in India knows is that the Muslim population in India is accepted and protected in India, unlike the religious minorities in places next doot like Pakistan. The bill is asking why should India pretend that is not true.
