A Tesla on autopilot rear-ended a Connecticut troopers vehicle early Saturday as the driver was checking on his dog in the back seat, state police said.
Police said they had responded to a disabled vehicle that was stopped in the middle of Interstate 95. While waiting for a tow, the self-driving Tesla came down the road.
After striking the trooper's vehicle, the driver in the Tesla then rear-ended the disabled vehicle before stopping.

In fact go after the city, county and state of occurrence.
Telsa’s description of “Autopilot” is clear that it is not the same autonomous operation. “Current Autopilot features require active driver supervision and do not make the vehicle autonomous.”
Trains run on set tracks and they are not auto-piloted because too many things can go wrong.
I have enough military experience with “autopilot” that I would never trust it.
Eh, that ain’t so bad. ABBA did a song with that name, didn’t they?
“...striking the trooper’s vehicle.” Wow. If the trooper was killed, then the self-driving fad would also be killed.
U are right. I wrote right where I meant that the left/outer lane is for faster traffic. Looks like most know? Hope we all will call our local police and/or sheriff plus our elected types. It is so bad here that we have people driving 30 MPH on a very busy 45 MPH strip even with little traffic. Who needs 400-500 feet in front of them at 45 MPH? We all see drivers looking at their damn cell phone and texting at stop lights. I see this same crap on three interstates here plus all alternate routes. We have no faster traffic use outer/left lane signs in Nashville. If there is one tell me where?
Correct.
“Insuring their own vehicles helps keep certain information about accidents secret.”
VERY interesting point!
“If one should ever slam into you, be sure to file a lawsuit against the state where the collision occurred for allowing this company to use their highways and people on them as test subjects.”
Not that I would ever admit to knowing about... ;’}
Even in the leftmost lanes drivers are required to stay under the speed limit. In practice that is risky for slow drivers, especially in those states where drivers are armed.
In 20 years kids won't believe people were allowed to manually control 4000 pound machines manually zipping along within mere inches of each other. You are wrong. Book that.
To the people involved, any accident is important. Auto pilot driving only has to take the moron drivers off the road to effect both the serious injury and deaths caused by vehicles downward. I can see a time when the insurance companies will not let a vehicle be human driven if there is ANY indication of alcohol sensed in the vehicle in multiple ways. That in itself would possibly significantly lower the carnage drunk drivers cause. If they manage to lower the highway deaths to 5,000 or lower a year (and that is a tech challenge, not an impossibility), I doubt anyone will be able to argue for personal driving.
DK
True, but: few cops will arrest for 4-5 MPH over speed limit unless school zone. I see folks doing 50-70 mph in front of my house. It is 35 mph. These local cops have 2 main speed traps. I have asked them to stop this. They refuse.
Bearing your screen name in mind, one could assume that ABBA is not in your daily lexicon. Though any self-respecting true musician would take into account all varying types of music ;-). I can go from Megadeth to the Maestro Pavarotti and thoroughly enjoy both.
I think several people have been killed by autopilot vehicles already.
I can’t wait until they field all the tractor trailers with self driving capability.
