It’s been suggested that Americans would be better off if the United States was more like Sweden. Do the Swedes know something that we don’t? Sweden: Lessons for America? A Personal Exploration by Johan Norberg delves into the economic and social landscape of the Swedish scholar’s homeland. Join him to see that the lessons to be learned from Sweden may not be the ones you expect.

The one-hour documentary follows Norberg on a journey through the history of Sweden’s economic rise, from one of the poorest countries in the world to one of the most prosperous. The program illuminates key ideas and enterprises that sparked the reform and continue to help Sweden maintain its lofty economic position, including freedom of the press, free trade, new technology companies, crazy jobs and even an old Swedish superhero.

I didn't know that Sweden... - handed out school vouchers to everyone, so you can choose to send your kids to any school you want, public or private. - has no minimum wage law - has one of the least progressive tax system. Low income people pay their fair share through VAT taxes - encourages companies to be profitable. - the state stays out of negotiations between unions and employers - is very free market oriented - has a very decentralized health care system, with local government administering it. - the majority of taxes collected go to the local government where local people have more control over the politicians.

If there are any Freepers that live or are familiar with life in Sweden, I would be interested to know their reaction to this report.

In 50 years this country isn't going to exist.

The Muslims are already taking over.

Don’t they have Gender Quotas for most Boards of Directors?
I think a certain percentage of most boards has to be women, whether it pertains to the function of that business or not.
That ain’t right!

I’ve spent a good deal of time there. It is a remarkable country with remarkable people. What makes it work is a rock solid protestant work ethic culture. Two brief examples:

Walking down the main street in one of Sweden’s largest cities. Restaurants everywhere. People park their baby buggies (with babies in the) on the sidewalk outside the restaurant and then go in and dine. Why? Because their babies are safe.

The buses are honor system. They don’t check whether people swipe their passes when they get on. I have never seen anyone get on a bus in Sweden without dutifully swiping their pass.

If I were to live outside the US, it would be in Sweden.

It’s been a few years since I was there. I understand the Malmo problem. I hope they have not ruined a great nation and a great people.

I don't think those two combined would equal the age of my wife, so I'll let them credit the extra dozen years or so to my account towards the next transaction. 🤣

If some type of socialism is going to work anywhere, it’s in the Scandinavian countries. Scandinavians ave smart, honest and very conscientious. They are the type that are least likely to take advantage of the “system” - they understand that if they screw the system they’re screwing themselves, and anyone that does would be ostracized.

I truly believe that that type of attitude is built into their genes. American Scandinavians in Minnesota and Wisconsin behave similarly.

Thanks for posting this video. I’d heard that Sweden had made changes, but this video gave a good explanation.

Ah, Sweden, the place where engineers earning a high salary still can’t afford a car or a house, and a beer costs $10. But I will say, even the hotel tap water was delicious.

There are good things about Sweden. There are bad things: open armed welcoming of rapists/jihadis/violent fundamentalist religious fanatics. Favoring of them over Swedes.

Currently the bad things outweigh the good, and Sweden is off my list of places to visit.

Absolutely right! You understand the Scandinavians perfectly.

There used to be a Swede here posting under the name of WesternCulture...but I guess he got tired of the constant Sweden bashing and left. At least I haven’t seen any posts from him for a few years now. You could look up his older comments.

“There are bad things: open armed welcoming of rapists/jihadis/violent fundamentalist religious fanatics. Favoring of them over Swedes.”

I think they believe that their natural traits of honesty, conscientiousness and personal responsibility can be instilled in anybody. They will soon find out otherwise.
