The woman's charred remains were found near a highway underpass on November 27, sparking nationwide outrage and protests in several major cities including Bengaluru and India's capital, New Delhi. Many of the demonstrators carried placards and chanted slogans demanding the death penalty for the suspects.
They had been taken to the spot to reconstruct the crime between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. Friday.
"Some of the accused snatched the weapons from the police personnel and fired at them," said Reddy. "In self-defense, the police fired at the accused."
No details were made available regarding the number of police at the scene during the incident, or how the four accused had managed to obtain the weapons from the officers.
Speaking to local television on Friday, the woman's father, who has also not been named, said that the actions of the police would mean that his "daughter's soul will finally attain peace."
"I want to congratulate the government of Telangana, the police and the people who have been supporting me," he added.
A sister of the victim said she believed the incident would deter others from raping in future.

I have no reason to doubt the official story.
Sure, let them get a hold of guns that are firing blanks then mow them down in “self defense”. No messy trials and instant justice.
I kinda’ like it this time, but you can keep that kind of stuff there.
I'm certainly glad the Police were able to react quickly and foil the escape attempt.
Apparently these Reconstructions work well at quickly closing cases.
“They had been taken to the spot to reconstruct the crime between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. Friday.”
The po-po be taking care of bidness.
Good for them.
Only some of the accused were shot.
Should have CNN article....says 4 men got guns...but also says some of accused got guns...some Indians speak of injustice to accused...but firing guns at police sealed the accused fate.
So, “shot while trying to escape”?
It would also be good if they fell down many flights of steps before they were killed in the “shootout”. ;-)
All of the accused thugs were shot and killed “while trying to escape”. Nope, nothing suspicious about that . . . or about holding a 3:00 am reconstruction of a horrific crime.
Where did an Indian cop get a gun, Pakistan?
I had an imergency landing in India in 1990s without visa and any proper documents at all and remember they sent some guys to keep us from leaving the tarmac. All were in weird uniforms and most armed with long sticks instead of guns. Some had guns and these were positively ancient, not even common bolt action rifles but something of earlier design.
