Nikola Corporation To Unveil Game-Changing Battery Cell Technology At Nikola World 2020
PR Newswire ^ | Nov 19, 2019, 09:01 ET | News provided by Nikola Corporation

- Technology encompasses world's first free-standing/self-supported electrode with a cathode that has 4x the energy density of lithium-ion

- Achieves 2,000 cycles

- Cell technology expected to cost 50% less to produce than lithium-ion

- Could drive down the cost of hydrogen and double the range of battery-electric vehicles worldwide

- Nikola will share intellectual property with OEMs around the world that contribute

=======================================================================================

PHOENIX, Nov. 19, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Nikola Corporation is excited to announce details of its new battery that has a record energy density of 1,100 watt-hours per kg on the material level and 500 watt-hours per kg on the production cell level. The Nikola prototype cell is the first battery that removes binder material and current collectors, enabling more energy storage within the cell. It is also expected to pass nail penetration standards, thus reducing potential vehicle fires.

Nikola's Motor Company's commercial truck product portfolio includes the Nikola Two, Nikola Tre and Nikola One. The company is headquartered in Phoenix.

================================================================================

This battery technology could increase the range of current EV passenger cars from 300 miles up to 600 miles with little or no increase to battery size and weight. The technology is also designed to operate in existing vehicle conditions. Moreover, cycling the cells over 2,000 times has shown acceptable end-of-life performance.

Nikola's new cell technology is environmentally friendly and easy to recycle. While conventional lithium-ion cells contain elements that are toxic and expensive, the new technology will have a positive impact on the earth's resources, landfills and recycling plants.

This month, Nikola entered into a letter of intent to acquire a world-class battery engineering team to help bring the new battery to pre-production. Through this acquisition, Nikola will add 15 PhDs and five master's degree team members. Due to confidentiality and security reasons, additional details of the acquisition will not be disclosed until Nikola World 2020.

"This is the biggest advancement we have seen in the battery world," said Trevor Milton, CEO, Nikola Motor Company. "We are not talking about small improvements; we are talking about doubling your cell phone battery capacity. We are talking about doubling the range of BEVs and hydrogen-electric vehicles around the world."

"Nikola is in discussions with customers for truck orders that could fill production slots for more than ten years and propel Nikola to become the top truck manufacturer in the world in terms of revenue. Now the question is why not share it with the world?" said Milton.

Nikola will show the batteries charging and discharging in front of the crowd at Nikola World. The date of Nikola World will be announced soon but is expected to be fall of 2020.

Points include:

Nikola's battery electric trucks could now drive 800 miles fully loaded between charges

Nikola trucks could weigh 5,000 lbs. less than the competition if same battery size was kept

Nikola's hydrogen-electric fuel cell trucks could surpass 1,000 miles between stops and top off in 15 minutes

World's first free-standing electrode automotive battery

Energy density up to 1,100 watt-hours per kg on a material level and 500 watt-hours per kg on a production cell level including casing, terminals and separator -- more than double current lithium-ion battery cells

Cycled over 2,000 times with acceptable end-of-life performance

40% reduction in weight compared to lithium-ion cells

50% material cost reduction per kWh compared to lithium-ion batteries

Due to the impact this technology will have on society and emissions, Nikola has taken an unprecedented position to share the intellectual property (IP) with other OEMs, even competitors, that contribute to the Nikola IP license and new consortium.

OEMs or other partners can email batteries@nikolamotor.com for more information.

They are talking battery cycles, not drive cycles. Even if the range is only 500 miles vice the 600/800 claimed, 2,000 cycles is a million miles, longer than a typical diesel engine’s life.

no need to get testy here texas- calm down- I’ve expendable to you why I think the two claims in the line are separate issues regarding the capabilities of the battery—

Ok. I am convinced you cannot comprehend so I will make it very clear.

Your post:

Nikola’s hydrogen-electric fuel cell trucks could surpass 1,000 miles between stops and top off in 15 minutes

NO BATTERY TO TOP OFF

My recently acquired diesel (odometer reads 9,000 miles) has done 810 Interstate miles on a full tank...twice.This car can be refuelled ("recharged") in about 4 minutes at any one of about 40,000 refuelling stations from coast to coast.

When EVs can come even close to that (400 mile range-recharge in 15 minutes) I might consider one.Until then,no way Jose.

what are you saying, Hydrogen electric doesn’t have to recharge batteries?

Perhaps I don’t understand this- are you suggesting all they have to do is top off the fuel cell with water and they’re good to go for another 1000 miles?

The discussion was about recharging time- not topping off the hydro cell- The fella posted that in response to my question about recharging time- i pointed out that his comment was about topping off, not charging a battery to full charge-

What am i missing here?

500 watt-hours per kg on a production cell level including casing, terminals and separator

Certainly a big deal if true. While it's still a tiny fraction of the 12,000 Wh/kg of gasoline, there are factors that help level the playing field. An electric drive train is approximately 3X as efficient as current IC engine drive trains. Also, it's easy enough to increase the size of the battery to meet range requirements at this energy density. "Cost to own and operate" is yet to be seen, and the the lack of charging infrastructure and inconvenience of charging are still factors. Considering the path we are on, electric vehicles WILL be shoved down our throat over the next decade or two. New technology like this will at least make it a little easier to swallow.

Hence the importance of acknowledging & allowing that technology must go thru a “dirty” phase before achieving a superior “clean” phase. Yes, naysayers, EVs involve toxic materials - but given enough demand we can find better solutions.

...and time to sell Tesla stock! If many OEM’s have access to this technology they’ll all accelerate their EV programs. I’d have a hard time not buying one if I can go 500-600 miles between charging, especially if it makes the price plummet. This would make an EV much more viable, I’d argue it might tip the scale for most.

Yeah? What’s the point? Hydrogen electric fuel cell vehicles don’t need recharging? Do i have electric vehicle types mixed up or something?

apparently my mistake was that this article in the thread and the link i posted are talking two different technologies?

https://www.extremetech.com/extreme/259195-tesla-semi-500-mile-range-cheaper-diesel-quick-charge

This link talks about charging the batteries- which will take about 30 minutes to add about 400 mile range- I wasn’t making the connection that the thread article was talking about a different technology than the one i posted to in above link apparently-

"The top off could be discussing a separate issue- they could be making two points in the same sentence- which is how i understood it- a fully discharged battery isn’t going to fully recharge in 15 minutes- not that i know of-"

The article is discussing two different technologies...one a "full-battery" system, and the other a hydrogen-fuel-cell system. It is the fuel cell system that can "top off" in 15 minutes (it is just filling a hydrogen tank). The "full-battery" will take longer...I didn't see the spec for that (but then I didn't read the whole thing in depth either).

For my money, I will put it into that oily stuff that keeps coming out of the ground. It is like magic, it is likely an endless supply, and the CO2 released is a bonus for life.

Thanks, I caught my mistake- wish texas had just came out and said that right off the bat- I couldn’t understand why he was pointing out hydrogen electric- then it dawned on me the article i posted to was not about hydrogen electric- I got the two mixed up- tired mind didn’t catch it unfortunately- thanks for the explanation-
