Woman killed by pack of wild boars outside Texas home

Christine Rollins, 59, was attacked in Anahuac, east of Houston, outside a home where she worked as a caregiver to an elderly woman.

Chambers County Sheriff Brian Hawthorne told reporters on Monday: "In my 35 years I will tell you it's one of the worst things I've ever seen."

"No doubt in my mind that it was multiple animals and we can tell that from the different sizes of the bites," said Sheriff Hawthorne, adding that the homeowner's dogs appear to have chased away the hogs before Rollins' body was discovered.

The sheriff said neighbours had recently complained about rampant feral hogs, and officials have since laid traps for them.

I worked in a big city ER for years and I’ve seen death in many, many forms.Yet it’s certainly easy for me to imagine this being a particularly ‘unfortunate” way to go.

Texas has a thriving feral pig processing industry.

That reminds me. In Virginia some hunters wanted more coons to hunt, so they imported a whole bunch from Florida and released them. Unfortunately the coons they imported from Florida had rabies. Now you have to assume that any racoon is possibly rabid. For some reason that I can't figure, skunks also are often rabid.

Far as I know, a pack of savage carrier pigeons never killed anyone.

[That’s what they said about carrier pigeons. ]

Passenger pigeons aren’t particularly bright. Pigs are some of the smartest land mammals. They can undo latches. They’re smarter than dogs and almost as smart as the lower primates.

Do you recall what year that was?

We literally went from “No one has seen a rabid coon in their lifetime” to my dad shooting half a dozen in *my front yard* every year.

I’m just across the river from the part of WV that abuts VA.

Makes me wonder.

It’s always ope season on feral hogs. They are considered pests.

Getting near the hogs and their litters was the ONLY thing that would cause my Gramma to kick our asses, when I was a kid.

I think hogs are nastier.
Hogs will attack one another when competing for the food, and if one gets hurt, and bleeds and the others get a taste, then he’s food too.
I do not think lions would do that.

Hey, guys, did any of you see the picture accompanying this story on Fox and other places? The stock photo looks to contain javelinas and their babies, not feral hogs. I’ve spent a lot of outdoors time in South Texas where javelinas are rampant and a frequent nuisance. Unless molested, they are wary of humans. A pack of feral hogs? - not so much!

Staggering, drooling, seizing, sometimes found dying, out in broad daylight.

The three I had the misfortune of dealing with, after the dogs got near them, were ALL rabid and the dogs had to get boosters and I had to get the whole series.

The local paper had rabid coon reports every week for several years.

It was horrible.

Good photo here:

https://palmettowildlifeextractors.com/wild-hogs-in-south-carolina/

Lived in a gated, senior community on the SC coast (Hilton Head). Had a prime lot on cul-de-sac with a ‘private’ lagoon. Those hogs were everywhere - gators too!!!!

Sold it and moved out.

Not that I wouldn’t be grateful for a pack of GSDs to show up, too.
