Less than two years ago, Detroit Lions general manager Bob Quinn announced the firing of coach Jim Caldwell. Quinns reasoning was that Caldwell wasnt delivering enough victories and the Lions were stalled out as good, but not great.
I think we have more than a competitive team to be competing for championships, Quinn said. At the end of the day, its wanting to take this team to the next level To me, thats winning championships, thats winning playoff games and thats winning the Super Bowl.
Bold talk. Unapologetic talk.
This is the NFL, not Pop Warner, so demanding more, especially of a franchise that hasnt achieved anything for decades and was in the prime of quarterback Matthew Stafford, was almost a breath of fresh air.
Caldwells record in Detroit? It was 36-28, with two playoff appearances. Hed just put together consecutive 9-7 seasons.
That wasnt good enough for the new-look Lions. OK, then. Go big.

Quinn forgot one of life’s great lessons—pigs get fat and hots get slaughtered.
Correction—hogs get slaughtered.
JETS!!!!!!!
The Curse of Bobby Layne is real.
They need to transfer to the NFC east to have a chance.
The Bengals could win the NFC East.
I live here. In Detroit.
I sat down with my wife. She put the Lion’s game on.
...and there he was.
Matt.
With his iconic sharpen yellow #2 pencil behind his ear.
My first thought was “moron”.
Then it got worse.
Thank the Lord I don’t care about the NFL.
...but my wife does with her cute little Lion’s shirt on.
After the second up the gut go no where play followed by a screen pass guaranteeing a 4th and 12, she advised Matt on where he could reposition his pencil.
Matt Stafford is a cool customer and I’m glad he’s faking injury this year.
Who wants to be sacrificed by an adolescent head coach.
Well at least for Dallas fans, the Mavs and Stars are looking good.
With the way the Cowboys, and Eagles are playing, I agree with you.
I’m trying to figure out who is the worse coach: Patricia or Garrett. Well I guess Garrett did beat Patricia last week.
Ah, I’ve spent 35 years waiting for a superbowl.
it ain’t gonna happen in my lifetime and i’m 51!!!
But I got to be happy for a day :)
Not to worry, you still have the Red Wings, Tigers and Pistons.
Take heart, even the Cubs won a championship eventually. Hopefully for the Jets it won’t take 108 years.
Geeze, thanks for rubbing it in.
On my first morning in Michigan after moving there the Lions fired Darryl Rogers as coach and replaced him with Wayne Fontes.
And little has changed since.
You’ve always got President Trump.
At least Fontes did get them to an NFC Championship Game.
Never hire a football coach named Patricia.
Yeah that playoff stomping of the Cryboys at the Pontiac Silverdome was the football highlight of my time up there.
