You can find all the Windows Ping list threads with FR search: just search on keyword "windowspinglist".

Home users don’t necessarily need an OS to be “in support”, especially if they are satisfied with their present apps and browser. The last big breakthrough was mainstream 64 bit OS (I don’t count the poorly supported Windows XP 64 bit)

Currently trying to figure this out now. Been on Windows since 3.1. We’re both retired, so there isn’t the need to try and keep up with whatever OS was in use at work. Plan to use one spare desktop PC to try out Linux, but I suspect a Win 10 PC will be ordered soon. Not pleased about this.

I am still using a VISTA. Works well for what I do.

Meh. I keep on Win 7 computer operational on my office desk because I like the Skype feature and it doesn’t work on my main Linux Mint computer I’m typing this on. I just happened to do an update on Win 7 box the other day which required something like 500 MB. Sheesh. Anything that needs that amount of updating is probably not that great for home use anyway. Microsoft has the business world in a near monopoly. Not the home use market though unless certain functions, like Skype, are needed.

I’m thinking 10 years from now that same Win 7 box will still be there on those few times I need it but otherwise fuggetabout it. Linux just works and works well without having to constantly update it or restart it. I can go a month between restarts normally and it works very similar to Windows so it wasn’t like there was a steep learning curve.

I see Microsoft is adopting the Linux architecture due to its solid reliability. ‘Bout time. I wouldn’t switch back to Windows if they made it free like Linux is.

An FYI, for those who own a business or manage IT for one Microsoft is charging 26 dollars per Windows 7 machine to continue providing security updates after January.

I still run VMWare with WindowsXP, Windows7, and WindowsNT on my Windows 10 machine. I will soon be able to get rid of NT, and hopefully get rid of 7 within the next year, but I am afraid I am stuck with XP for a few years yet

Lenix or Apple are the solution. I refuse to buy new computer, printers and software, and hardware for greedy companies.

I do everything that I can on Linux Mint. I have some older Windows programs that have been discontinued but I rely on them. My Windows 7 PC never is connected to the internet. I have several backup Windows 7 machines.

I will need Windows 10 at some point for some very specific purposes so will eventually get a Win 10 PC. No hurry.

7 still works well. This is planned obsolescence, which Apple practices as well. It’s to make us buy new products.

Some people treat this as if it is the end of the world. Ask yourself, when was the last time you contacted MSFT for support? You say never? There you go.

I will admit not having Win 7 updates to thwart viruses is a concern.

I’ll probably run Win7 Pro for many more years but it never connects to the internet or a network. I surf and do most everything else on Linux Mint with the Plasma desktop. Linux Mint people are going to quit making builds/distros with the Plasma desktop though so I’ll have to find another distribution that has the Plasma desktop because it’s my favorite.

I had Win98 on a PC for years after formal support ended, and even ran WinXP programs/apps on it with no trouble. Then after I did switch that PC to WinXP I ran it for years after formal support ended, and again with no issues. I only switched to that PC to Win7 when I could not then get current anti-virus software with system requirements that accepted WinXP.

I imagine my one PC with Win7 will continue to do just fine for years to come. Again I expect it will only have to be upgraded to Win???, or replaced, when new versions of antivirus software are not compatible on Win7.

I believe in the “if it’s not broke don’t fix it” standard for PC operating systems and the software running on them.

Having the newest or latest and greatest has most often been not about any real “improvement” of nay necessity but merely newer versions with additional bells and whistles that are almost never needed or used, while what was working just fine gets more complicated to get to.

So what? Have not gotten any support for W7 from MS in years.

No interest in dealing with endless updates slowing things down like on my wife’s W10 laptop.
