It was a movie about aimless youth in the UK. Trainspotting just referred to a hobby of watching trains. Something pointless from the yute perspective.
In the miserable parts of the world, the people riding on top of the trains have paid for their seats.

Anyone else have to go look up what “subway surfing” is? I could sort-of guess from context, although I pictured it being on top of the cars. Apparently it is simply hanging on the side of the car at the doorway, feet perched on a small ledge just outside the door.
