Oooo! Oooo! The Howard Hawks version from '51? Forget the Ravens game. Yes the original from 1951. Never get tired of it.

The ‘82 John Carpenter version is a close second. Just enough differences and similarities to see they fell from the same tree, but would still keep you watching. Carpenter could do no wrong back in those days, IMO. Never did get the East movie to stream, but the West loaded just fine a couple hours later.

I like Carpenter and I also like that he does the score for his movies too. But his version of The Thing was way over the top on effects. The first fifteen minutes are just fantastic. After that a little drop-off.

I have a copy of Carpenter's Lost Themes CD - it's a lot of main score and atmospheric music he wrote for various movies, both filmed and unfilmed, that never made it onto the final soundtracks. There was an alternate ending shot for The Thing as an insurance policy, in case it didn't go over well with test audiences. MacReady was actually rescued, and was given a blood test to prove that he wasn't the Thing. Carpenter chose to leave the ending as seen; he wanted the fates of the final characters to be ambiguous. (Did MacReady and Childs survive? Was either of them a Thing? If so, did they infect the rescue/recovery team when their bodies were recovered? What happened to Garry and Nauls in the tunnels under the outpost? Their fates were never revealed. Hmmmm.) That movie didn't do well at the box office (although a buddy and I saw it and loved it); but it's become such a cult hit that it rated a 'Making Of' DVD, a prequel made a few years back which was OK but nowhere near as good as either of the others, a couple of video games I'd love to play, and there was even a sequel mini-series written about fifteen years ago that SyFy was supposed to film, but just dropped without explanation. You take a broader view of the body of Carpenter's work, as writer or director: He produced what the late novelist Harlan Ellison called 'speculative fiction' (Escape from New York/LA, Assault on Precinct 13), biographies (Elvis), slice and dice horror (the Halloween series), paranormal (Christine, The Fog), sci-fi/paranormal comedy (Dark Star, Big Trouble In Little China - a fave of mine); hell, I can't begin to cover it all.
