24°F here in east central Alabama right now, on The Hooch. We got a few wraparound flurries this morning; up in N. GA. (Blue Ridge) there was a dusting that stuck. My cat was sitting in the dining room window, still as a stone, watching. He gets those cartoon thought bubbles pop over his head once in a while, and the one I saw this morning read, 'WTF'? LOL I was on the phone with my bud up in VA this evening, and he was raising hell about the cold. My mother said she went to the supermarket yesterday in Western MD and didn't even wear a coat, and it's down to the upper 20's this evening. (She also said a deer walked right up to the porch and ate her yellow mums last night, and now she has two pots of sticks sitting beside the front door. LOL!!!!!) Remember how hot it's been, seemingly all summer (which felt like it kicked in last May)? For the record, we had a heat index of 102 on October 5th. Now some places will have a wind chill as low as 13 tonight. That's an 89 degree temperature inversion in five weeks. I tell everyone: the South has two seasons - Summer, and Suck. There's maybe a five week window in between where the environmental conditions are such that sapient life forms can exist without some sort of life support equipment. The latest from NWS Birmingham and NWS Peachtree City:

I always check the Fairbanks temp before complaining.. it’s 23 this morning right outside of Charlotte. 11 in Fairbanks.
Winter comes every year and I still act like its the end of the world.
Maybe next year I will take up a winter sport. Like starting the day with a spiced rum hot chocolate.
My professional life might suffer though.

I miss my moms homemade hot chocolate. We would go out sledding all day. Come home frozen solid....
and my mom would have a big pot of hot chocolate on the stove all ready for us.
Those were the days.
I lived on a street with a steep hill. The town would close off the street (except for residents) and not plow it so that kids from all around could use it for sledding. On a Saturday afternoon, there could easily be 100 or more kids out there, and no protective adults spoiling the fun.
Living right there was perfect. After dinner, we would go back out for another session under the streetlights, with the hill practically deserted. And yes, there was always the hot chocolate.
There were no complaints, and no serious injuries.
They could never do that now. The fear of lawyers always puts a stop to anything like that.
