Every time I see a picture of that flag raising or of the memorial, I think of the Johnny Cash song about Ira Hayes...

Happy Birthday to Steve, Kelly, Gary and all the rest of my “Teufel Hunden” buddies still out there...And especially to those like my cousin Johnnie who made the ultimate sacrifice (at 18—Okinawa) and have gone to The Lord!

Happy 244th birthday to the United States Marine Corps! You are the finest expeditionary fighting force in world history and you have stood guard, defending the country against its enemies, and will continue to stand guard for as long as the there is a United States of America. Ooh-rah! and Semper Fi, do or die.
(From a grateful retired Mustang Navy officer who was privileged to serve “the Corps” as a Hospital Corpsman ‘Devil Doc’ for more than a few years before he failed upward. ;-)

My oldest boy was graduated from Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C. in August. Oorah!

Former Marine here...1973 to 1979. Semper Fidelis!
As my Marine buddies for decades have told me, no such thing as a former Marine. Always a Marine!

My son-in-law just retired from the Corps after 22 years.

I am fortunate enough to have two (2) birthdays to celebrate in the month of November... The Marine Corps (244 years) and my own (86 years)... These days I feel, sometimes, as though I'm catching up, in age, to the Corps...
The old memory sometimes gives me problems, but I can remember that June night in 1951 when the train pulled into Yemassee at 1 A.M. and the several cars of sleepy new recruits were pushed, shoved, clubbed, dragged, and kicked off the train and herded onto buses...
The beginning of a life-changing summer experience, the same experience that my grandfather (in 1916) and my father (in 1942) had undergone...
