Any AR configuration in 5.56.
A good bolt action scoped 308
Any pump shotgun in 12 ga.
Any hi cap 9mm handgun. In a SHTF scenario, your handgun is just an avenue to your long gun.
Any good reliable 22lr rifle/handgun.
What these armchairs never consider is ammo availability, and how much ammo you can transport on your person.
Most folks cannot afford $2K for a Benelli shotgun. I have an 870P-Remington. Off the police line. Quality control assured. Approx.$700.
The M-14 is too heavy for many guys, much less girls. I carried one all over Ft. Polk, La. in the 60s. Cumbersome. I find my AR-15 Colt LE much easier to carry/fire. And ammo is everywhere.
10MM ammo hard to find. I stick with 9MM. Glock 19 and 26. Also, a couple of .45s.
The van that was transporting them (all of them, I'm an honest man and would not hold back) were totally destroyed in the fire caused by the horrifying wreck the van was involved in.
None were recovered and alas...the insurance had lapsed, but the driver did survive.
But, if I DID have a few weapons, I would have a 1911 in all three configurations, i.e., Gov model, Commanders model and the Officers model.
I would have several lever action long rifles...with at least one being the 45.70, one being in .357, one in 30.06 and one in that old standby, .35 Rem.
I would have at least one Assault Rifle, uh, I mean an Armalite Rifle style, just for the ability to lay down enough lead to get out the back door, if need be, using the largest damned magazine, several of them, that I can find, a Rem 1100 with at least 3 barrels, an 870 with at least 3 barrels, and one of them fitted with changeable chokes.
And of course, just to be able to put a squirrel or rabbit in the cook pot, that old standby, the 10-22, two of them in fact, one with the plastic stock, stainless steel barrel, etc and the other wooden stocked, stainless steel with ghost sights.
I'd also have my S&W Model 686 at hand, which ammo matches the aforementioned long rifle in .357 and my Bond Arms derringer, with several barrels, at least one .45ACP, one .38/.357, one 22WMR and one .410/.45 Colt.
I would have at least one .22 handgun with interchangeable cylinders in .22 and .22WMR, for small varmint purposes and of course, even though I personally do not like them, several Glock pistols in 9mm, .45 and a 10mm, and of course two 92f's, which are worn on the outside but functional as hell on the inside.
I mean WERE, they were, as in past tense...
And for throwdown purposes, several RG Rohn potmetal Saturday Nite Specials. And one must have a sufficient quantity of ammo, enough, that theoretically, it would have to be stored on a ground floor because of the immense weight...theoretically, of course.
And then, there are the knives...and I cannot for the life of me remember why they were in that van, possibly on the way to be re-sharpened or something, but, be that as it may, all my knives are kaput, but I would conceivably have at least 5, if not more, good Stag handled Dozier style skinners, at least two bone handled bush craft style and probably 10 or 12, even though I personally don't care for them, Kephart style bush craft knives and 40 or 50 or so of tactical folders in Benchmade, Gerber, Al Mar, etc, etc versions.
But, alas, that is a pipe dream, as I previously related, all of my guns (and knives) were destroyed in that Great Fire.
Woe is me.

Seriously...what I have or do not have is nobody's damned business...but I firmly believe hard times are coming.
May not be in my lifetime, may not be bad for me even if it is in my lifetime.
But I am firmly convinced that we are going to have to fight for our country and that fight is going to be doorstep to doorstep, because these damned democrat assholes are hellbent on taking every thing they can from God-fearing, conservative, moral and honest folks like you and I.
Keep your powder dry.
Everyone has their ideas on what is best. Cowboy carry is what helped the nation expand. (that would be pistol and rifle in same chambering). I like pump shotguns for rugged reliability. Revolvers rarely jam or fail.
The 3 best weapons, rifle, pistol, shotgun, the 3 weapons you are most comfortable & accurate with in calibers which will prove easily obtainable AFTER SHTF. Take your advice from police & military & ignore the rifle range know it alls, they don’t. Keep it simple stupid. Practice, practice, practice. If you are just now thinking of preparing, God help you, but better late than never.
BUMP
Also, I would put a 22lr in that mix. If its good enough for assassins, its important to consider.
The author lost me at “going out on your front porch”.
If you present yourself as an easy target and draw fire to your own house, which three guns you are holding will not matter for very long.
Gotta keep repeating myself. Try lugging 1000 rounds of centerfire ammo in a backpack. Then try lugging 1000 rounds of .22LR in a backpack. Now imagine having to walk 3 miles in a hurry with that backpack.
Or - a shotgun with 18” barrel with 7-shot magazine(s)
A 9mm with 17 round magazine(s), and a 40 cal with 15 round Magazine(s) and any decent hunting-adequate rifle as long as one is familiar and capable with them all......and don’t forget the ear and eye protection so you don’t disable yourself during a fray.
Shotgun / Rifle / Handgun.
Just so.
Pick what you like and works well for you.
Buckshot / Ball / Hollow Points of your preference.
First off, going out on your front porch — no matter what you are armed with — is not very bright.
If it is at all possible, always fight defensively from some kind of concealment or barricade.
An M1A is a great weapon, but not very practical for urban or suburban defense (but fine if you are in a rural environment). For urban or suburban defense an AR (5.56) or a Ruger Mini-14 will do the job. The shotgun (in either 12 or 20 gauge) is good, and I prefer a pump over a semi-auto. For a handgun, I’d go with a Glock 19, but that is a personal choice. Also, you can never go wrong with a good revolver, preferably one that can shoot .38 SPL and its slightly bigger brother .38 SPL +P (I don’t think a .357 magnum is necessary, but if it floats your boat....).
The common element for my choices is the availability of ammunition. 5.56 and .223 ammo are ubiquitous, as is 9mm. And .38 SPL is found pretty much everywhere, as well. Same for the the shotgun ammo.
If I ever had to engage in any kind of long-range fight I’d use the good old reliable Remington 700 chambered in .30-06. .308 would be fine, as well; but, I’m just partial to the .30-06 (can you tell by my screen name?).
Also, ALWAYS have a .22LR handy, and the Ruger 10/22 and the Marlin 60 are both very good; also, a good option is the Marlin 25.
Finally, for those last stand times, when up close and personal is what remains, a Ka-Bar battle knife or a good tactical tomahawk are just dandy.
Anyway, just my $0.02.
I like Mike Adams but I dont read his column for info on weapons or tactics. He is hardly an authority in these areas.

Having been in that situation with multiple malicious intruders on my property, where I had called 9-1-1, I see this differently from Mike Adams. Note: The police got there perhaps 20 minutes later, and I never had to pull the trigger, but I sure did think everything through.
I live in the People’s Republic of Maryland, and I know our self-defense laws word for word, along with how they are interpreted where I live. Even if I can legally shoot, I want to make sure that I can win in court, because I will be prosecuted if I shoot a reliable democrat-voting criminal (plus I want to make sure that I can live with the decision I make):
- Centerfire rifle? Not happening unless/until the rule of law has collapsed.
- My decision came down to two defensive handguns (Glock 17 with 30 rounds of 9 mm, or my top-quality .45 Auto 1911 with 7 + 1 rounds), or
- a 12 gauge Remington 870 with five rounds.
Twenty minutes is a long time to think through those options when you know it could actually happen at any moment. It’s a good idea to do that thinking in advance. I am adequate with the shotgun (and it has a red dot), great with the Glock and it will not run out of ammo, and amazing with the 1911. I was not going outside my house, obviously, but I was going to respond appropriately if they crossed the threshold. If there had been a threat of arson, my response would have been different. All you can really do is think through a broad range of scenarios, make sure you have the tools and training, and stay alert (and, of course, move farther away from bad areas if you can convince your family).
Desert Tech MDR in .308 - takes PMAG 5,10,20 or 30 rd.
there will be a .223/5.56 conversion kit shipping in early 2020. Handier than any wood stock traditional rifle and more resistant to dirt/mud than the M1A.
MAS 49/59 in 7.5 French - also nice but ammo is harder to source.
I love That Holster

Who Makes It?
Maybe the 308. But a semi auto shotgun is ridiculous for SHF situations. And good luck finding 10mm ammo.
Having ANY Firearm is better than having NO Firearm.
