I have tried to use a lap top and I have tried to use the finger swiping stuff ... and I just don't like them.
I like a mouse and I like a tower with a cup holder and all that.
Now, I suppose I could just get the sound card replaced, but this is an old Compaq CQ5210F PC that has served me well for what I do.
Surf FR, news, listen to the news bites frequently posted as we enter the most fascinating political cycle of all time.
What's out there that serves basic purposes ?
I don't need super memory because all I save is desktop hot links and personal pictures.
Most everything else I'll print out and save as a hard copy.
My favorite price is free, but seriously .... I would think there would be a reasonable desk top for a couple of hundred, but the ones I've seen have names I've never heard of.
Any input would be appreciated. And Jeffrey Epstein didn't commit suicide.
You know you can use a mouse with a laptop and a full keyboard as well.
USB speaker/headphones?
I’m like you; I don’t make a whole lot of demands on electronics. I picked up a refurbed Dell off Walmart’s website for about $100. Been using it fine now for three years.
Good time to get a new one — ‘tis the season! :D
I dunno man.
You could get a USED desktop at that price or a new laptop and the laptops are pretty darned fast.
could probably get 8gb on a laptop at that price.
not on a desktop, even used
Frankly, it doesn’t really sound like you need a computer. Why not consider a larger iPad?
I hate PC’s. Too many viruses, too much crap to worry about. Software alone is more than a few hundred.
Buy an iMac. You’ll be good for a decade or more and never worry about viruses again.
If you live in an area they cover, check Craigslist. You should be able to get a used PC better than you had for about $25- $50. If not, try Goodwill. People dump older PCs all the time. They basically have no value.
Wow! Compaq is to the computer world what Studebaker was to the automotive world. You certainly got your money’s worth!
My brother in-law is a Cleaner and the companies he cleans for gives him their old computers all the time and I clean a few and Bingo we have pretty good free computers ,LOL
Here’s an article from about 2 1/2 months ago on FR:

Good shopping to you. It’s almost Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
2016 Dell Optiplex 7010 Business Desktop Computer (Intel Quad Core i5 up to 3.8GHz Processor), 8GB RAM, 500GB HDD, DVD, Windows 10 Professional - $145.00 free shipping
Go on eBay or walmart.com and buy a refurbished one. I recently bought a high-end desktop from HP for $299. You would have no idea it was refurbished by the speed it works at.
My last 3 rigs have been from I Buy Power. You can literally configure everything from the case to motherboard, memory, you name it. It will not allow you to mis-match incompatible parts. It’s warrantied, you can even set a budget.

I’ve bought 2 at the local auction for $25/ea., checked them out at preview and they are fine.
“I like a mouse and I like a tower with a cup holder and all that.”
The cup holder on my desktop broke recently. It was a “CD” type cup holder. I replaced it with a newer “DVD” type cup holder and it works great, highly recommended.
In passing, go to Wallyworld and get a wireless mouse, the kind with a little plug that goes into the USB port. Mine cost $15. The battery lasts a couple of years, even with constant use. No wire. Lap top or desktop...
Stables online has a set of pages directed to buyers who are a “small business”, though no proof of being a small business is required.
I got a good deal on a refurbished small desktop PC from HP a few years back, that I bought for an older brother. It even came with a warranty, and even though Win 10 was out it came with Win 7 Home Premium. No keyboard, no mouse, no screen/monitor just the PC. I think it was under $300, had decent memory and decent hard drive and a CD/DVD read/writer.

Amazon, Dell and Newegg all have certified refurbs for under $200 that will do the job. I would recommend getting the BUSINESS (not consumer or workstation) line, Dell-Optiplex, Acer-Veriton, HP/Compaq-Pro... NOT Pavilion, Inspiron, or Aspire). Try to get an i5 or i7. An 512GB SSD is available for under $50 from Newegg and will make even an old computer more than fast enough for your purposes, but not necessary.
I don’t like Lenovo because of the Red China connection.
Vinyl plank flooring is what I am using for my work bench top. Very durable, waterproof and inexpensive.
