KANSAS CITY, Mo. The videos of mind-numbing first bites and long lines, the celebratory memes and fawning reviews: The return of the Popeyes chicken sandwich on Sunday has met with the same social-media frenzy that first greeted it last summer.
But embedded in many of the catchy memes and witty messages is not just an affection for spicy seasoning and crisp breading. Theres also a sentiment that Popeyes has struck a special chord for African-Americans and anybody who grew up eating black soul food specifically, that its celebrated sandwich tastes like something that could have come from a black home kitchen.
One Twitter user, @RocBoy_Mel, wrote Sunday that he did not know whose grandma made the sandwiches, but I finally got my hands on one today and I was very impressed.
Reactions like that are no accident: Popeyes has aggressively marketed itself to African-Americans, and many of its restaurants are in black communities.
In a Facebook post in August, Nadiyah Ali, a nurse from Katy, Texas, compared the sandwich to a rivals: Chick-fil-As version, she wrote, tasted as if it were made by a white woman named Sarah who grew up around black people. The Popeyes sandwich, she added, tasted like it was cooked by an older black lady named Lucille.
Black people were saying they liked the chicken not just for its taste, but also for the feelings of home cooking it evoked. It was the type of chicken they could take to a family potluck and not get a side-eye.

Around here in Baltimore you can track young black males by following the chicken bones tossed on the streets and sidewalks.
Sounds racist to me to say negros like fried chicken.
These people are idiots - Popeyes has always advertised to(and had its restaurants in areas of) minorities.
So of course some racist twit comes along and says it feels like black people food not realizing shes a brainwashed and pandered to idiot AND, Im sure, would be the first to jump up and attack capitalism and corporatism and how shes smart and not suckered in by those huckster ideals that enslave people like Chic-Fil-a
But hey... love that chicken from Popeyes.
McDonald’s has been pandering to blacks for years.
The article leaves out that the founder of Popeyes was Al Copeland, a WHITE from NOLA. And the restaurant bills itself as Louisiana cooking not black, but that Copeland deliberately opened in Black neighborhoods. Sounds like exploitation to me, but not to the NYT.
Black doesn't show dirt as easily as white. Think white gloves, or tablecloths.
Popeye’s was launched in the Deep South with supposedly “cajun” spices. I’m white and I prefer Popeye’s to the others because it is spicy, which apparently is attractive to blacks and there’s no shame in that.
When I went to Popeye’s restaurants I found not just black employees but whites and latinos.
It goes without saying that the fried chicken market is very competitive, particularly in the south and southwest so if their marketing strategy works, I’m all for it. It’s a very good product and I have no complaints.
Racist article.
I still do not understand why the sandwich “want away” shortly after its chaotic introduction. If they ran out, why didn’t they just make more?
I had one yesterday it was good...
The democrats have nothing to run except race and rich people...
Eighty percent of the country has no idea what is going on...
I moved to SW Florida from Colorado. (the Californians destroyed it)
In the smaller towns there is no race problem...the kids are fine not problem..
It is when you get in the large cities like Tampa ,Orlando,
I’m not sure how this fits in, but the Popeyes in a town I often drive through had a sign up for about 4 months that their Chicken Sandwich would be back “soon”. 4 months to get a sandwich...
Sheesh!

Ssssshhh.
Good question. See my post 31.
Is there some secret ingredient from deep in the African jungle? Plus it requires 2 months to age?
I tried a Popeyes and would opt for a tastier Chic
They can market to Blacks as a demographic all they want, I like it better than KFC, Lee's, and, yes, even CFA (when I'm in the mood for chicken on the bone, fixin's and such...).
=:-)
I dig the way that it's fried.
Feckoff, muzztard!
Ditto! I just don't like getting a side of attitude from the employees every time I go there.
The lady in their TV commercials just annoys me.
