I was under the impression that this breed is not aggressive. Guess I was misinformed.

While I know what you mean - different breeds have varying degrees to which they are prone to aggression - many people don't realize that any dog can be aggressive under the proper circumstances. And I often wonder how many dog owners have any real understanding and knowledge of the animal. Not a lot I think.

“One story said a sledge hammer was found by her body with blood on both sides...”

The 911 call had the guy calling in all upset.

“My wife is dead! My wife is dead!! Do something!!!”

“Okay sir, calm down, help is already on the way, but you need to calm down. First thing - are you sure she is really dead?”

“Ok, ok, ok I think she is. Ok, let me check, I don’t know. Ok, ok, hold on...”

“Sir??”

“Okay - I’m back - yes she’s dead now. Now what do I do?”

The deck was so covered in feces its surface could not be seen. The wife a/k/a soft-hearted dog “rescuer” probably didn’t have it in her to be dominant and was thus seen by the dogs as a pushover, in other words, submissive, and thus they had no respect for her. All that piled up poop says the woman was scared of the dogs, too fearful to go out there and clean up and unable to train them where to poop, leading to depression. The husband viewed the dogs as her problem and offered no leadership, either, as he let his wife drink and pop pills.

That means the alpha position was not taken by a human and was literally left to the dogs to sort out, which in two evenly matched dogs with dominant personalities and no boundaries is a very dangerous thing, no matter the breed. The tension/energy level has no upper limit and is explosive.

That, and this

“An officer who responded to the home for a possible overdose found the Great Danes in an enclosed deck that was covered in feces so badly that the “actual deck could not be seen,” according to a police report”

She sounded like a wacko animal lover. Her husband couldn’t have been a very bright bulb either.

If they were rescues, who knows if they had been abused? Formerly abused animals can be unpredictable, especially at that size.

A lot of people don’t like Rottweilers. I didn’t for a long time. But over time, I have come to see them in a bit of a different light. I have seen that some of them seem to have a degree of entertaining goofiness to them that Boxers sometimes display.

I am still wary around them. I think they are too strong and powerful not to give them that respect if you don’t know them well.

Agreed, but...I will say, I had a close encounter with one that burned into my memory.

My sister was a hippie, and came home one time in a car with some other hippies and they had a Great Dane in the back seat with them (which I didn’t know)

I walked over to the car they were sitting in and stuck my head in the window to say hello, and my field of view was filled immediately with a gaping mouth lunging towards my face.

I must have startled the dog when I stuck my head in, and must managed to pull back and heard the snap of the jaws missing my face.

Holy crap. What sticks out in my mind, and that was over forty years ago, was the look of the inside of that Great Dane’s mouth. It was odd, mottled pink, white, and I think black, with weird looking ribs going side to side on the roof of the dog’s mouth.

There was something strange and alien about that, and I have often wondered how different my life would have been had I not reflexively jerked my head away.

Even then, I didn’t blame the dog, but I was pretty pissed at my sister, because she didn’t warn me or something.

My Ursa was a goof, a sweet goof. But, she loved her humans, especially her sister (my daughter.) She could become very menacing when she felt her loved ones were in danger.

But the irony? I climb on chairs when Yorkies are around. They terrify me.

She could have cleaned it while they were inside the house. Clearly they were inside sometimes, or they couldn't have killed her. Sounds to me like those animals were no better off with her than they were before.

Never knew what a Rottweiler was until some white trash bought the house next to us. hada male and female Rotties. Female was hell on wheels, the male warmed up to me after treats and talking to.

He would later come up to me and stand on hind legs for me to offer an arm for foreleg support and get pets.

His owners said he did not do that with anyone. He just came to trust me, and I am not a dog person (cats) but it happened.

“The deck was so covered in feces its surface could not be seen. “

You would be shocked how many houses I have walked into that the floor (and in one case every single surface one of many dozen cats could get to at the angle of repose) was covered with feces. Some folks are just too lazy and irresponsible to provide their animals a litter box or even pick up the mess.

Great Danes have been inbred for decades upon decades, track dogs, one desirable trait and they were bred for it and it alone for years. They also have the cranial plague that Dobermans suffer from.

Dobermans do NOT have a “cranial plague”.

Stupid myth that refuses to die.

It’s not a myth, sorry if I busted your bubble. The excessive bone structure in the head leaves insufficient volume for some of their brains.

That’s a great story, well told!

And yes, experiences like that knock you’re whole world around and it stays that way.

Sorry to ruin your day.

I've only had Dobes for 43 years and that is complete and utter bullshit.

But you go on believing a lie.
