A pair of Great Danes killed an Ohio woman who kept the rescued animals over her husband’s objections, authorities said.
Mary Matthews, 49, was found dead Friday in her Waynesville home by her husband, Dale Mark Matthews, some two years after she rescued the aggressive dogs

I never wanted Great Danes but she wanted to rescue them,” Matthews told the newspaper. “She loved animals so I let her get them. I probably should have put my foot down and said no, obviously.”
Matthews said he was bitten by one of the massive dogs last month, leading him to worry that someone else could be attacked one day.

Please note that, as others have pointed out, there are some “red-flag” items surrounding this, and I am not at all certain that this item falls into a “prototypical” dog mauling death.

Warren County, OH - Clearcreek Township Police said a woman was found dead in her home Friday after being attacked by her two dogs. Police had originally been dispatched to the home on a report of a possible overdose. Mary Matthews, 49-years old, was found lying on the bathroom floor unresponsive. Her husband Dale Mark Matthews and his son discovered her body. Earlier that day, Dale had been released from the Warren County Jail, according to the police report.
The attack occurred in the couple’s home in the 7400 block of Waterway Drive in Clearcreek Township. Matthews was found covered in blood and deceased when police arrived. Police found bloodstains in many of the rooms and a pair of torn up bloodstained sweatpants were located in front of the living room couch. The couch also had blood and dog fur all over it. Police found a chunk of flesh on the couch too. Numerous beer cans and medication bottles littered the home.”
Another interesting item is that the rate of death by dog mauling has almost doubled recently.
Instead of one death by dog mauling every 13 days, it has increased to 6 deaths within the last 40, for a rate of one human death by dog mauling every 6.6 days, the latest being this lady.
Of the six deaths, 1 has been by Great Dane, 4 have been by pit bull, and 1 by Rottweilers.
All the dead have been either the dogs’ owner, family member, or friend.
