Want to Raise Successful Boys? Science Says Do This
Getpocket/Inc. ^ | 1/6/17 | Bill Murphy, Jr.

This is a story about successful kids (especially boys), common sense, and research.

Most of us spend hours each day sitting at work. Science says it's killing us, and we have developed all kinds of fads to combat it—from standing desks to smartphone alerts to get us up and moving.

Armed with that knowledge, however, what do we force our kids to do each day at school? Sit still, for six or eight hours.

Now researchers say that mistake leads us into a three-pronged, perfect storm of problems:

1. We overprotect kids, trying to keep them safe from all physical dangers—which ultimately increases their likelihood of real health issues.

2. We inhibit children's academic growth (especially among boys), because the lack of physical activity makes it harder for them to concentrate.

3. When they fail to conform quietly to this low-energy paradigm, we over-diagnose or even punish kids for reacting the way they're naturally built to react.

Always wondered why the parents kept dropping me off farther from home. To toughen me up while trying to find my way home.

The rat inspired social engineering is geared towards over protection and shunning of males. It leads to snow flakes and pajama boys. And the people doing the engineering have the morale high ground in today’s culture.

So yes, I’m agreeable to the article. They are preaching toxic male whatever. It’s hate speech to lefties.

At 16 I was driving a grain truck two states away from home. At 19 I was in a jungle far off. Many of today’s kids could not cope with any of it.

Lack of physical activity outdoors has another bad effect. It leads to myopia.

50 years ago every opthamologist would tell you myopia was genetic.

No one believes that now. You don’t have whole populations going from 2% myopia to 70% in one generation like they did in East Asia starting in the ‘60s when they all got compulsory schooling and still think it’s genetic.

All the research trying to identify the mechanism that causes myopia has really only identified one key component of those who didn’t get it: the subjects had at least 3 hours of outdoor activity daily.

Modern schools obviously don’t promote that. The kids who do push for it are labeled “hyperactive”, ADHD etc.

But they don’t end up staring through lenses, even if they do read a fair amount.

Let ‘em run. Be in sports. Outside is where we evolved like all of nature, we didn’t stay in the caves.

And when they moved after they dropped you off, that really made you tougher.

Yes...and much of ADHD could be resolved with physical activity, IMHO

Kids need teachers that know how to teach...

My wife was a first second teacher

All her kids could read and do math..

They had hands on learning..not just work sheets

She taught in a school with a lot of mother helpers..

example a watermelon...math lesson

cut it you lean ..half and quarter circle
measure...radius and diameter ...feet and inches

Count the seeds ten and hundreds

Then you graph the results..

A lot more but I cannot remember..

Then you get to eat the watermelon

physics was ramps and Match box cars..

Boys are not meant to sit still. I’d try to incorporate movement with learning for my boys. I’d put number or alphabet cards around the living room or yard and ask them how fast can you get the letter that makes a “sss” sound, or how fast can you get the number to add to 7 to get 12. They loved doing that.

It also helps to make things relevant to boys’ interests. My oldest son’s first grade teacher gave the children the option of doing regular math worksheets or 49er [football] math. The 49er math worksheets had problems like Rice + Montana = ? or what’s Clark minus Lott. The boys were begging for 49er math worksheets to take home. I’m doing something similar now with Thomas the Train engine #s with my 4-year-old grandson.

The feminized and LGBT-ized public schools want to turn little boys into little girls to further their specialized agendas. Particularly, I think the Left wants to turn white boys into queers and encourage the white girls to have sex with minority boys so they can have more “diversity” since every child not born of two whites is automatically classified as a minority and told that white people hate them so they will grow up hating America and voting Democrat.

Brilliant approach. I learned via stats on baseball cards. Had to have analogies in real life and it worked. I was caught in fifth grade drawing to scale 3-D Star Trek Enterprise on notebook paper when I was supposed to be reading. That teacher sent me to the principle. They kept my drawings...one was posted in the office for all to see. For some reason the teachers threw me in engineering classes every single year. Took good teachers to SEE the skills in boys and direct them a little.

Let the kids wander about in feral packs until dinner time. They get exercise, of the body and mind. They create and play games. Use their imaginations, learn inter personal skills, how to solve problems, resolve conflicts and grow in so many ways. Kids need explore time away from adults. And stop feeding boys psychotropic drugs every time they stray from acting like girls. If there was any justice in the world half the parents in the US since the early 80s would be in prison for child abuse

I would be a classic study for myopia due to being inside, and our sons and grand kids would be classic for 20/20 or 20/10 and being outside.

My high school junior year, I dropped out of sports after a knee injury and went to work in store after school in a store and worked most afternoons and one weekend day.

My vision then, went from probably 20/10 to blurry past 50’.

That got worse in college, and I started wearing glasses to drive.

While on active Navy duty at sea, I volunteered for the mid day watches on the bridge to see the sun and be in sunshine. I started wearing non prescription sun glasses on the watches. My vision after about an hour outside was as good as the non glass wearers.

I hunted a lot after active duty, the first 2 years, and my vision was good and didn’t need an rx. Then, I got promoted and spent more time at a desk or waiting to see clients. My pre Navy rx glasses worked. I could pass a DMV vision and did not need newer glasses.

At age fourty I needed glasses drive at night. At 50, I needed them in the day time to legally drive. 10 years ago I had cataracts and got the internal accommodating lenses.

I still don’t need glasses. However DMV makes you try to see with one eye closed and that doesn’t work with the accommodating lenses. So I have a pair of lensed glasses to drive.

Our sons have all ways been outside guys. In their 50’s they still have 20/10 vision. Our grand kids are the same in their early 20’s. They are great duck hunters and see ducks and geese before non family members.

Thanks, I will be sending our sons and grand kids a medical article/study addressing this syndrome and how to avoid myopia by being outside.

It is amazing what we learn on Free Republic.

If you keep posting this reality, you need to be careful crossing streets around liberals: "The Left wants to turn white boys into queers and encourage the white girls to have sex with minority boys so they can have more “diversity” since every child not born of two whites is automatically classified as a minority and told that white people hate them so they will grow up hating America and voting Democrat.
