Gates police have charged a Chili man with attempted murder in a road rage incident that turned into a fight, leaving a Gates man with serious stab wounds to the neck and leg.
Officers said Levar Merritt, 42, is charged with second-degree attempted murder, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, and first-degree assault.
He was arraigned and sent to the Monroe County Jail on $45,000 cash bail or $80,000 bond.
Police said the alleged incident ended in the parking lot of the Lyell Avenue Wegmans, but started on the road between him and the 39-year-old victim.
"One gentleman pulled out a box cutter and stabbed the other motorist multiple times," said Gates Police Chief James VanBrederode.
Merritt surrendered to police already at the store.
Police say the victim is in guarded condition at an area hospital.
"By all means, do not get out and confront the individual, you don't know if they're armed as we saw yesterday, or what they're capable of doing," VanBrederode said.
This isnt the first time Merritt has been involved in a confrontation like this. Gates police said this road rage incident is nearly a repeat of a similar one on June 20 at the Gates Wegmans.

Two of my favorite eateries...Chili’s & Wegman’s.
Wegmans is a cult.
Chili? Is he made outta peppers, or is he from Chile?
Wegmans is awesome, except for the prices.
Chili is how it is spelled.
I was thinking the incident was over beans/no beans....
yeah I try not to shop there for “convenience sake.” I prefer Aldi.
SW of Rochester.
Chili is a township here, not a restaurant. Iy is adjacent to the Gates township.
Gentlemen prefer sabers at dawn with proper seconds to ensure the duel is fair.
I just assumed he forgot his coat.
OP needed the New York tag, for future reference. Maybe even (New York) added to the thread title.
Most will not know Chili, New York is a place. I had to look it up to verify.
These kind of stories, when posted on an international site like FR, really annoy me. I’m sure that when someone near Chili picks up the local rag and reads the story they are aware of what state they are in. However, I don’t know if this is in North Dakota, Canada or Russia.
Yup. One of my pet peeves.
I left Rochester, NY 10 years ago, we go back every year at Christmas to visit family... and Wegmans.
One of my pet peeves is calling an attempted murderer a “gentleman”.
Chili, pronounced Cha-ee-la-ee, not chill-ee as in hot peppers, or Chee-lay as in Chile the country.
I’m pretty sure I put “new York” in the topics section. I could be mistaken
