If you have designs on the treasure that legend says is hidden along Rose Hill Road in Port Tobacco, youd best think again.
That is, unless you want to meet the specter of a huge dog that protects his masters fortune.
That dog is the Blue Dog, and he is a central character in what may be the oldest ghost story in the United States. Faithful to the end, the Blue Dog has been spooking locals and tourists alike for hundreds of years.
...
Most retellings of the story place it after the American Revolution. Soldier Charles Sims has just come into some wealth, and he and his faithful dog, a Blue Tick Hound, went to one of the local watering holes for a drink. As often happens, too much drink loosens the tongue, and this is what happened to Charles Sims. He began to talk and boast of his riches and the deed he had to a property. He had these with him in the bar; whether he flaunted them around we dont know, but to be sure, the locals were listening.
One of those listening was Port Tobacco resident Henry Hanos. When Sims left the bar, Hanos and some others followed him. They overtook Sims and his dog along Rose Hill Road, attacking him and killing both Sims and his pet. They fell on a rock near the road. Hanos took the fortune and buried it beneath a nearby holly tree and fled.
But when Hanos tried to retrieve his treasure, Sims faithful servant wouldnt have it. The legend says that the ghost of a large blue dog appeared, howled, and charged at Hanos. Hanos fled the scene.

I am reminded of some vague similarities to the Sherlock Holmes story, The Hound of the Baskervilles.
Why go treasure hunting at night?
Go on June 20th, the longest day of the year. Start at sunrise.
It reminds me of the old vampire movies where they always go looking for the vampire at sundown.
Had an uncle with a Blue Tic hound!..................
[[The legend says that the ghost of a large blue dog appeared, howled, and charged at Hanos.]]
Had he just stood his ground, the ghost dog woulda floated right (because it was just a figment of his imagination) through him leaving him unharmed, and he coudla been rich-
A dog allowed in a tavern? Must've been an emotional support animal.
Just like what happened to Winston!
In the Reagan era, “Yellow Dog” Democrats were conservative Democrats. By the Clinton era, “Blue Dog” Democrats were moderate Democrats. There weren’t many Yellow Dogs left.
Now there aren’t that many Blue Dogs left either.
Good story

You want scary stories?
There’s a grip of minutes at the beginning where the interview and guest are doing personal background and chit chatting, then it goes into “the event”.
Dude has hundreds of these stories on his channel. The earlier ones are the best imo.
Maryland “Ghost State” PING!
Never heard of this one. But I love a good ghost story, especially one from back home.
Now you mainly see Rabid Dog Democrats.
Never heard of it either. I’ve only been IN southern MD a few times, but never ran across it nor from here in central.
I have problems with a) blue-tick coonhound (neither “huge” nor likely really invented yet, and totally wrong origin area) b) the rock (could’ve existed but may not today thanks to all the “development” that happens).
This is a big one, but somewhat outdated and slow to load:
