Monster Mash
Listening! This is cool!
Every October, carved pumpkins peer out from porches and doorsteps in the United States and other parts of the world.Gourd-like orange fruits inscribed with ghoulish faces and illuminated by candles are a sure sign of the Halloween season. The practice of decorating jack-o-lanternsthe name comes from an Irish folktale about a man named Stingy Jackoriginated in Ireland, where large turnips and potatoes served as an early canvas. Irish immigrants brought the tradition to America, home of the pumpkin, and it became an integral part of Halloween festivities.

Pardon my bragging, but members of my community theater group say I do a pretty fair Boris Karloff impression. We used it in a couple comedies we produced in recent seasons.
That said, I vote for “Monster Mash” — I’d like to perform it in a Halloween musical review someday, but right now I just have to keep it close to home.

Check out the above link for a two-disc set called “Macabre Masterpieces.”
I know this thread is about popular song, but I submit that you need to start listening to some classical if you’re looking for the mother lode of spooky Halloween music.
My personal favorite in this collection is Camille Saint-Saens’ “Danse Macabre.”
Anyone who watched the Disney classic “Fantasia” will be familiar with Mussorgsky’s intense “Night on Bald Mountain,” and the supernatural but lighthearted “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” by Paul Dukas, featuring Mickey Mouse in his greatest role.
I don’t own this set, for the simple reason that I have pretty much all the compositions on other recordings. But I have listened to the whole collection online and it’s a treat.
