Friday, Oct. 18 3:20 p.m. ET: The Houston Astros are one game away from the World Series, but Mattress Mack isnt relaxing.
The owner of Houston-based Gallery Furniture is on his last day of giving full refunds to customers if the Astros win the World Series and his liability is approaching $20 million were told.
And hes in the office.
Its going crazy in here, he yells into the phone.
Unable to get insurance, weve tracked Mattress Mack making $7.25 million in bets on the Astros to win the World Series with a payout of $14.8 million if they won.
Im not gonna tell you how much Ive bet, but its more than that, Mack, whose real name is Jim McIngvale, said. Hey, can you put my cell phone in the article? So that bookmakers can call me?

Thanks to Mattress Mack I actually placed a bet on the Astros and won.
Too bad I didn't buy a mattress. Could have used a free one.
Jim Mackingvale: a GENUINE Houston civic champion
He seems to be the second responder in most of Houston’s mass disasters with generosity beyond description
For those that don’t understand why he flew to New Jersey..it may be because certain bookies in certain states have to have the geolocater on your phone when you place a bet to make sure you are in the state. I am guessing that is why he flew to New Jersey.
I have to say I would be a nervous wreck if I was him...a 20 million dollar liability on this promotion
Good luck against that Washington pitching staff
I think were in for a good series. I like nats in 6
With anything concerning DC.....phuque them. Just like New York City.
Astros starting pitching is better than Nats. Scherzer is great, but still trying to find his groove after being on the IL. Sanchez cannot be counted upon. Trust me on this.
Not long along Verlander, Scherzer and Sanchez all pitched for my team, the Detroit Tigers. Sanchez would pitch brilliantly for or couple or 3 games, then lose it. I think it’s that screwy hip turn in his delivery that throws him off.
Astros over Nats in 5.
That was me. I have contacted Seb Gorka & others to get both Mack (for opening his stores as refugee centers for flood victims) and Andrew Breitbart (for obvious reasons).
Every 4 years, Mack asks customers to “vote” on who will win, then he rebates the full amount of the mattress for those who voted right.
A great guy, eccentric, but Houston is lucky to have him.
After Harvey, Mack opened his store and let people who had flooded live in his store. He also provided meals to them.
Good guy.
so who wins the first one since nationals are rested up?
So if I’m reading this correctly:
1) He sells mattress products and offers a 100% rebate if the Astros win
2) He places bets that the Astros will win because no one will ensure his rebate offer.
3) The Rebate offer is believed to be worth ~$20M.
4) The bets will get him ~$15.5M
5) So if the Astros win the payouts from the bets would cover about 75% of his rebate offer or be ~4.5M short at this point?
I assume the reason he’s looking for additional bookies is to cover the additional gap he has on the rebate.
He probably has more bets out but they are calling it even due to 5 million evaluation in goodwill and free advertising etc.
He doesn’t look well. this may be the last year he does it. He gets a chance in the next election.
Astros. I presume Cole will start the first game fully rested. He has been the toughest pitcher in baseball since, like May.
He is probably only rebating the mattress and not all of the extras. Think volume and publicity. No matter what happens, he will be a winner.
He is a good guy and his good deeds will be rewarded.

Nats in 6.
Been resting almost a week!

As far as he is concerned, he has spent the money already. It’s $20 million worth of promotion.
Kinda connected to the story as I am making a bet on getting a mattress that will last.
I am looking for a new mattress. I have bought 3 in 6 years and they all have divots in them. I am the divot....
#1 complaint in online searches is about depressions in the mattress after a short time. My last Beautyrest mattress was bought in July 2018. I have looked at regular mattress’s, hybrid, memory foam/latex/gel and they all look great except you won’t know till months go by and the divot starts.
Any suggestions?
Should I just buy cheap like $500 or less mattress or more expensive one like the $1,100 I spent the last time?
I intend to place my bet during the Thanksgiving sales.
My recommendation will be a bit different from what your probably asking.
I have some lower back tightness that flairs up on occasion...mostly from sitting too long or long drives with a lot of traffic..so it’s tension related.
Over the years I’ve found that a really good futon laid out on a hard surface was the best sleep I ever got.
Don’t put it on a set of slats or a fold down couch or anything. Either put a solid board over the bed frame or you can invest in a couple of tatami mats (you can order on Walmart.com etc)
Whole setup will cost you less than a new mattress unless you go the tatami route and then depending on the quality of tatami it will be same or slightly more. Eventually you’ll need a new futon - just because like all bed covers and such it’ll eventually get ripe. But if you air it outside every few months and fluff it up by hitting it with a tennis racket or such it should easily last you 10 years - and replacement will always be cheaper if you spill something on it, etc.
You can also go the route of getting completely rid of the bed frame (we haven’t) and rolling it up every morning to give yourself additional space during the day.
If you need a softer surface you can double the futons by placing one on top of another and it will still be cheaper in the end.
