Gamblers wagered a record-breaking $445 million on sports in New Jersey in September, the largest monthly total in the state since legal sports betting began in June 2018.
Tuesday's release of figures came as the rapidly growing New Jersey sports betting market challenges Nevada for nationwide leadership of the industry.
The two states have toggled back and forth in recent months in terms of who takes in more sports bets, but Nevada still has the highest monthly totals, including nearly $600 million in March, the largest monthly amount in U.S. history.

People are free do what they want. However have to wonder how many families, careers and lives have been ruined as avid sports fans become serious and compulsive gamblers. BTW the additional revenue has not made a dent in the state’s chronic budget problems or mitigated high taxes. The money just gets sucked into Trenton and disappears.
Imagine spending all that money on goods......besides food, booze and women.
Sometimes I wonder, how much of the popularity of sports, is based on people’s appreciation for the skills and excitement of a particular sport, and how much of the popularity is driven by casual fans who are placing bets, and watch the games to see how their bets work out.
NJ is the Soprano State. Corrupt as Hell.
A Leftist moral cesspool.
There is another side to this...One would have to be completely naive not to think some seedy people threaten people over those games. Maybe not everyone. Maybe not often. But I have no doubt threats are made
I wondered if the Lions referees were just that bad...or were they paid off..threatened..etc.
One of the stock people I see on twitter posts big bets by the stock market people..and big bets in sports. I bet on an Indiana game because of “duffel boy” bet. A big $5.00.
It’s a guy who goes into Vegas and makes bets with duffels full of money.
Thought the same thing. With the huge amount of money gambled and so much at stake, its not beyond the realm to wonder if the refs are compromised. That line from the movie “Casino” about “crooked fookin zebras” comes to mind. Hard to explain some of those calls in NFL games.
It’s retirement planning!
Way to go, New Jersey!
It is sickening that failed states like NJ are sucking every cent out of residents by property taxes as property values are going down and the schools are failing. Trenton will never help with tax relief because the agenda is pumping up the practically empty pension coffers that is a time bomb. So the push 24/7 is legalized pot, legalized sports gambling, lottery and casinos. In essence, the typical NJ resident works to pay the state, subsidize illegals, welfare parasites and make sure the pensioners get to live a very nice lifestyle so thus for most any discretionary income goes to government sanctioned vice.
