It's only $4.99. But Costco's rotisserie chicken comes at a huge price
CNN ^ | Oct 112019 | Nathaniel Meyersohn

At the back of Costco's stores, past the televisions, jewelry, jumbo-sized ketchup jugs and tubs of mixed nuts, is one of the retailer's most prized items: The rotisserie chicken that costs just $4.99.

Cheap Kirkland Signature rotisserie chickens aren't only a quick way for families to get dinner on the table. For Costco, the chickens are a lure, pulling customers into stores and getting them to browse the aisles, adding sometimes hundreds of dollars worth of items to their shopping carts before they pick up that bird. The chickens have become almost a cult item. 91 million were sold last year, double the number from a decade earlier. They have their own Facebook page with nearly 13,000 followers. So Costco is willing to go to extreme lengths to keep its chickens at $4.99. For the past few years, it's been recruiting farmers for this moment: The official opening of a sprawling, $450 million poultry complex of its very own in Nebraska.

The only upside to Jewel is it is close by the house. They up their prices because they are convenient, and many customers are older and aren’t going to trek miles to shop elsewhere to save a buck. I’ll go there for lunchmeat and to pick up a few things. Other than that, the bulk of my shopping is at Wallmart, then Costco for meats. I can’t imagine places like Jewel surviving if they continue on their current path. Jewel lost me as a loyal customer.

The big Walmart chicken is around $4 more but is a bit bigger and certainly tastes better. Costco chicken is a bit bland. Love the $1.50 Hot Dog.

I stop patronizing places that switched from Coke to Pepsi products, in most cases.

Pepsi will sell me soft drinks made with sugar at regular prices. Coke wants $1.25 for a single serve bottle of Mexican Coke. And I just bought a 2 liter bottle of sugared Dr Pepper for $1.50.

If the Coca-Cola company decides to start selling real Coke (made with sugar an properly carbonated) for regular prices, I'll come back.

They are complaining that the contracts offered to the farmers are unfair. No one is forcing the farmers to get into the chicken business.

Here in South Texas, HEB will MATCH Costco’s prices & some things are actually LESS expensive.
(Usually gas is about 2-3 cents less per gallon.
AND

HEB sells DIESEL fuel, too.

I’d wondered how a chicken could have so much fat. Overfeeding, good explanation. Thanks.

“And you asked HEB to match Costco’s price??”

Why match? You said HEB was 2-3 cents cheaper.

I don’t mean to be argumentative, but do you understand the word: USUALLY??
(At least here in San Antonio & in North Austin, HEB’s gas is nearly always 2 cents less than at Costco, for the same grade.)

Sam’s Club has big ass rotisserie chickens for $4.98. Oven stuffer size... super juicy with magic crack powder spice on outside... don’t know what it is, but I can’t live without them. We are also Costco members (I know, conspicuous consumers) ... their chickens are often not quite done enough for me. Too pink inside.

My objection to Winn-Dixie rotisserie chicken is the taste of preservatives.

$120 for two people, then there is the cost of gas if you live 40-60 miles round trip from the nearest store, and the cost of your time to drive there. Local supermarkets are cheaper and products are just as good.

I joined back when they had only 2 stores. Back then only farmers and commercial fishermen were allowed membership - no tax on any items. Then they opened the stores to nurses and doctors - everything began to cost more - just a little bit but it added up quickly. Soon I only bought the canned tuna, catsup, maple syrup and one or two frozen products. Then that no longer paid and I moved away from a handy store. Several years later I rejoined because they had the cheapest tires, then nothing for the 10 years since.
