Yes, Broadcast-TV Ratings Are Down. No, the Sky Isn't Falling — Here's Why
TV Line ^ | October 15, 2019 | Matt Webb Mitovich

Broadcast-TV ratings may again be on the decline — as they have been since… well, for a while! — but that does not mean ABC, CBS et al are about to close up shop and leave your Zenith with nothing but test patterns. And here is the important reason why.

Money.

“But,” you argue, “ratings are down! You typed it right up above! I see it with my own eyes!”

And the short retort to that is: Remember what your high school economics teacher told you about supply and demand….

The longer answer, for those interested enough to stick around:

As recently reported by Ad Age, only four broadcast-TV programs this fall — Sunday Night Football, Thursday Night Football, This Is Us and The Masked Singer — are commanding $200,000 or more per 30-second spot. Yet as recently as four years ago, 10 shows belonged to that elite club.

Notable declines during that four-year stretch include Empire, which during its blockbuster freshman run charged $500K for a 30-second spot but now gets just $170K, while How to Get Away With Murder went from $250K during its buzzy second season to now under $100K.

The studio where they tape that show is close to ours. Yeah, it is a stupid concept but it doesn’t surprise me.

“Youngsters” don’t have the attention span for 20-episode season, especially when you can’t binge then NOW.

Frankly, the writers don’t have the attention span for them either.

I can’t think of one network show that is “must see” - most are pure crap and the writing lacks a modicum of intelligence...but lots of Socialist Warrior propaganda.

Thru ROKU, I watch...
SouthPark (mostly the older episodes i.e. “Gingers”, “The Last of the Meeheecans”, etc)
Get Shorty (EPIX) - absolutely GREAT series
A few movies on ROKU channel app

Thru Amazon “free” IMDB
Fringe
Warehouse 13
Limitless (the old CBS series)

Local-area Baseball ratings are up again in 2019 (more than recovering from an early-season slump). In most of America, they are the highest-rated TV channels! That’s right: on your average night, baseball is the highest rated show on TV. And summer isn’t just for re-runs anymore, with the year-round TV schedule!

“...but that does not mean ABC, CBS et al are about to close up shop and leave your Zenith with nothing but test patterns.”

They stopped making Zenith TVs in 1995, LOL!

So, is that cause or correlation? I get those two confused. ;)

I think you’re right about that.

Most nights this summer, if I was home with the TV on, it was baseball. Pittsburgh Pirate games mostly, and for the majority of the season they stunk.

Still better than any scripted shows on TV. At least baseball is unpredictable.

We binge Warehouse 13, too. ;)

I can’t think of a single show I’ve actually made an effort to watch since ‘Downton Abbey.’ (I will watch cooking shows, though.)

Wintertime leaves us snowbound a lot, so we watch rented and borrowed from the Library movies in the evenings.

We’re both hooked on any BBC crime series; ‘Vera’ ‘Wallander’ ‘Endeavor,’ etc.

I accidentally discovered Warehouse13 a couple of weeks ago - major binge to see all episodes. Found it entertaining and the story lines got quite inventive! :-)

Kinda “Fringe meets Indiana Jones” with a thread of humor tucked inside the episodes.

The final episode was a bit of a let down, though.

Last night I started re-watching and saw E1 and E2.

“Forever” and “Time after Time” on CW Seed (ROKU app) are good 1 season series binges. The latter a modern retelling of HGWells and Jack the Ripper.

Then there’s “Reaper” (ROKU ABC app) - just sheer fantasy of satan getting the soul of of an innocent thanks to his parents’ pre-birth deal with him. The actor, whose name I can’t recall, is hilarious as satan. The 18y/o innocent becomes a bounty hunter for satan to catch escaped souls from hell.

Thanks for the recommendations. I have my Netflix open in another window. ;)

One of my favorite movies is ‘Time After Time’ with Malcolm McDowell and Mary Steenburgen (I think they were married at one point?) Kind of dated now, but still a lot of fun - and scary! :)

I also like Saul Rubinek (Artie) in ANYTHING he’s been in. He was great in the Jesse Stone series and various movies. It always amazes me how the camera loves goofy looking people - Richard Belzer (Law & Order) comes immediately to mind, LOL!

(Make sure you watch the Jesse Stone movies, if you haven’t!)

I think you’re right about Malcolm McDowell and Mary Steenburgen although she’s now married to Ted Danson.

Re: Malcolm McDowell, I’ll always think of him in “Clockwork Orange” - saw it at the drive-in many, many moons ago.

He also had a very small part at the end of “Book of Eli” w/Denzel Washington - I always catch it when it’s on.

The “Time after Time” one season series on CWSeed is actually quite entertaining. For me, it briefly touches on the values & morals of an earlier time when HG was in London.

I’m not a movie buff by any stretch but these daze it’s a nice escape, albeit temporary, from the evil around us.
