FORT WORTH — Minutes before she was shot and killed by a Fort Worth police officer, Atatiana K. Jefferson was playing video games in her bedroom with her 8-year-old nephew, a lawyer for her family said Sunday.

Ms. Jefferson, 28, was proud of being the “cool auntie” to her siblings’ children, and had stayed up into the wee hours of Saturday morning with her nephew, Xbox controllers in their hands, according to S. Lee Merritt, the family’s lawyer. But the pair grew concerned around 2:25 a.m., he said, when they heard rustling outside the house and saw flashlights.

Amusing, but irrelevant.

As for the cop, he should get 25 or 30 years at a minimum.

The murderous cop who barged into another man's apartment and murdered him in cold blood only got 10 years ... and an outpouring of glurge and a hug from the judge.

Well, OK. I guess that’s “better” than sticking it to the taxpayer. I agree in principle at least, it should come out of their state retirement fund, for government employees. There has to be some kind of direct feedback mechanism between the people and their government. I wouldn’t want to be a cop, some people do, but I suspect it’s going to be impossible to recruit in many places.

Perhaps you know something I don’t. The police showed body cam stills of a handgun on the floor where deceased was shot. They blurred everything else around the gun. Please correct me if this has changed.

I know. That’s my point. Therefore, any compensation awarded should be taken out of the money we’ve already given them. Make sense?

A handgun was recovered next to the deceased according to multiple media outlets. Sounds more like a tragedy than a murder

There’s no indication that the gun was found on the floor next to the victim. There’s no indication as to where in the house the gun was found. You may actually turn out to be correct but the initial report that I heard was that the gun was simply found “in the house “. Likewise, you can correct me if I have outdated information. But then again, it wouldn’t matter one bit if the gun was in her hand at the time she was shot. She would’ve had every right to have the gun in her hand at the time.

Problem there, it is extracted from the taxpayers, who, it should be pointed out, did not shoot this lady. What good does that do? Nothing, that’s what.

As an employer you are responsible for the actions of your employees while they are on the job.

The Tax payers are the employers of the police departments. Maybe if they would pay some attention to who they were electing and who those people were hiring this kind of thing might become less common.

But I will bet you that they will not recall or fail to re-elect 95% of the people who they have hired to run the city.

Until they do so things like this will keep happening.

Their town, their responsibility.

Let’s assume that is true. If you are sitting in your back bedroom with a gun, it’s okay for a cop to shoot you when there has been no crime committed? Never mind the fact that you don’t even know a cop is on your property.

I heard gunshots and came out of my house with my gun’ Someone came through my hedge carrying a rifle. I didn’t shoot. Turns out he was a neighbor I didn’t know going after a raccoon. If I would have shot him I would have more justification than this cop. but I would have less legal backup than him. Cops are civilians, just like us. They need to be held to the same standards..

Nope. I don’t have any say in the matter. Don’t be fooled. Why should I be on the hook for their f$&ckups? That’s absurd. Not my clowns, not my circus.

the point is they are TRAINED Wrong.

They start with Barney Fife, and train him wrong.

Imagine if you told barney Fife to shoot first, ask questions later. He would do it.

That’s our modern training.

If you are a voter you have all the say. You think the city needs changing then start doing something to change it or leave.

You keep wanting to change the subject. I can understand that, but it won’t work around here at FR.

The taxpayers already paid them. We’re not arguing about who pays their salaries, so I’m not sure what your point is. Take any penalties out of money they’ve already got.

And - it will have exactly the effect you describe, which was my point all along. I’m sure we’re in agreement.

I like cops and the vast majority are the good guys.

Where are they speaking up and speaking out?

A welfare check isn’t a suspected burglary in progress. The guy even called the non-emergency number.

Also, a handgun was found next to the deceased.

Remember this one, Bert? He got 20 years, some in part for planting evidence.

This is what happens when you continue to allow freedom to kill unarmed people under the color of law just because they “saw a movement, or feared for their life.” Too many cops think they are immune from careless mistakes and they are correct in most cases. Cases where a civilian would be convicted.
