I just saw this talked about movie, and I guess my review adds little.
But I have to post it anyway.
From the opening scenes and throughout this movie exhibits extraordinary photography. It's dark, so dark, but so intimate. Old school close-ups of real facial expressions in tune with the drama.
And oh, what drama.
Prepare to join Arthur Fleck as he descends on a heart wrenching, terrifying trip into madness.
Phoenix and the movie are the one's to beat at the Oscars.

What part of “human madness” is not grounded in Satan?
Am I going to read any spoilers if I read the review or replies?
Joker didn’t kill Thomas Wayne in Batman’s origin store. Although, over time, DC comics changed Joker’s backstory.
Bale is done being Batman. The new (younger) Batman will be played by Robert Pattinson. Also, there will another rev of Superman. Warner recently signed JJ Abrams to a billion dollar deal, and rumors are he will reboot Supes (Cavil’s gone) and, Green Lantern and maybe Justice League.
Warner’s first attempt to create a DC comics extended universe failed. They decided that since the Wonder Woman and Aquaman movies did well that they would would concentrate more on stand-alone stories, not necessarily connected to one another.
Batman and Superman will next be played by younger actors. I like the idea of a connected comic book universe, but Warner showed it’s not easy.
Phoenix, until recently, indicated he wouldn’t be interested in playing Joker again. Sounds like he may be changing his tune, because he enjoyed working with that particular director so much. I doubt it will happen, but definitely interested to see how it all plays out.
When the next mass murder happens, Hollywood will blame the NRA.
I'm sure serial killers consider what they do 'art' and take pride in their kills.
The genie is out of the bottle. Hollywood will green light any script that will appeal to people who continue to crave ever more gruesome images of murder and death and each new film will raise the bar of sadism.
Hollywood will continue to make these movies and I will continue not to watch them.
I don't associate with the people who enjoy these films and I don't like being around people who laugh as they describe the gory details.
The ones I'm concerned about are the disaffected, mentally ill, loners who now have a new idol to emulate. Of course, most won't act out their revenge fantasies but these ideas are planted in their weak minds.
You enjoyed the skill and mastery of the 'art' form. I can understand that. I, however, don't care how well the film manipulated the audience (that's what films do, manipulate people with the smallest details). Whether it's a love story, a comedy, or a slasher film it's all about manipulating emotions. This one seems to have hit a home run with most people and critics.
Don't get me wrong. If you enjoyed the firm I'm not faulting you. The writers, actors, directors, producers are masters of manipulation and they achieved their goal.
(PS. Don't take any of this personally. I just don't enjoy this genre of 'art' regardless of how well it's done.)
I run everything through the filter of Phillipians 4:8: "whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirableif anything is excellent or praiseworthythink about such things."
In your opinion, should I plan to see this film?
Well, that’s just like your opinion man.
One not shared by normal people.
No. You are too convinced it sucks.
It will suck for the high and mighty.
Guaranteed.
I love psychological thrillers.
But, is this movie bloody and gory? That’s what I can’t stand.
Not gory, some blood. Tame compared to most horror films.
But it presents some intense violence.
It was a serious, unpretentious question from which I had hoped to receive a thoughtful answer from someone purporting to offer knowledgeable recommendations.
One not shared by normal people.
I told you not to take my comments personally. My critic was about Hollywood glamorizing violence and calling it 'art'.
Since you brought it up, when you refer to 'normal people' do you include Michael Moore? He raved about the film:
Michael Moore on Joker: "The greater danger to society may be if you DONT go see this movie."
It’s possible you could like it.
But it’s not for everyone.
If you are a highly empathetic person, you might want to skip it. It’ll wreak your day.
“My critic was about Hollywood glamorizing violence and calling it ‘art’. “
The violence is not glamorized.
It’s visceral and repugnant.
And I don't see how they CAN.
Joaquin Phoenix's "Joker" is entirely different from the one played by Heath Ledger, and the film is set in an entirely different continuity and universe from the Dark Knight films. They had said numerous times this film is a stand alone entry and NOT connected to any previous Batman movie.
Might as well be asking "With the success of the new Wonder Woman movie, I can't see how they won't have Lynda Carter dating Chris Pine in the next one"
Thanks for your interesting response. No one has ever accused me of excessive empathy, but I find myself very uncomfortable in emotionally-charged situations, due to some severe childhood traumas. It is an area I find the Lord challenging me to overcome, but from your caution it sounds like this isn’t a helpful vehicle for that.
Anyone who has experienced real trauma as a child should not see this film.
I saw Joker twice. I loved it, Phoenix is truly devoted to this chatacter and its high art. I keep thinking about the last scene, that even his exit dance is exceptional.
he did a great job.
Thanks for your review. I’ll be waiting for the movie to be released on video. The trailer makes this movie look too interesting to miss.
