Nobel chemistry prize: Lithium-ion battery scientists honoured
BBC ^ | 9 Oct 2019 | Paul Rincon

Three scientists have been awarded the 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the development of lithium-ion batteries.

John B Goodenough, M Stanley Whittingham and Akira Yoshino share the prize for their work on these rechargeable devices, which are used for portable electronics.

"We have gained access to a technical revolution. The laureates developed lightweight batteries of high enough potential to be useful in many applications."

In addition to their use in electric vehicles, the rechargeable devices could also store significant amounts of energy from renewable sources, such as solar and wind power.

It’s more than just the success of the lithium-ion battery. The chemistry and metallury involved opened the door to develop even more advanced batteries soon, now using graphene sheets or eventually even aluminum as a battery material.

All kidding aside - and recognizing how important batteries are to modern life, that doesn’t seem to rise to the level of previous Nobel awards.

Because their work is only applicable to hot air balloons.

At the age of 97, Prof Goodenough is the oldest ever Nobel laureate.

Prof. Goodenough?

Didn’t he have a cousin who thought he found the abominable snowman?
Prof. Notquiteyeti?

It's not all darkness. Spreading some goodness and light, Bonnie Charpentier, president of the American Chemical Society (ACS), commented: "In the face of increasing threats from extreme climate change, today's announcement shines a welcome bright light on the portability of energy that has enabled unprecedented advances in communication, transportation and other tools to support critical aspects of life around the world."

The sad thing about lithium ion batteries is that they are not any more efficient than lead acid batteries which were invented in 1859... they just weigh less. They require less maintenance and last longer in most cases, but they also have a higher failure rate and they cost around 3 times as much. They certainly have advantages in computers, phones, and other small electronic devices... but it is not quite the revolutionary technology we keep hearing about.

Three old white guys.

Prof Akira Yoshino?

Unsure as to how he self identifies?

He(?) may be disappointed to find out he is white?
But in today’s world, one never knows.

“At the age of 97, Prof Goodenough is the oldest ever Nobel laureate.”

He and his team did their work in the late 70’s.

Lithium Ion batteries have become big-time because of our billions of handheld devices, which were in turn made possible by computer chips that use very little power.

Lithium Ion batteries don’t come in large sizes. For instance, the Toyota Prius and probably all hybrids don’t use them.

Big LI ion batteries are too dangerous I think.

When aluminum bicycle frames came round, half the weight, twice the costs! And IMO rough riding.
Now they are everywhere.

That said, I still dream of titanium!

For instance, the Toyota Prius and probably all hybrids don’t use them.

The Plug-in Prius, which has a 4G engine, features a Lithium-Ion battery.
NB: The plugin Prius is mostly plugin, in name only! It still has an ICE.

The other Prius use NiMH.

Thanks for the information.

We’ve seen what happens when a phone or e-sig battery goes wild. Makes me worry about what a car LI battery would do if it got out of control, say, in a wreck. The engineers must have thought this through.
