But what is the breaking point? Peter Thiel doesn't concern me. People in favor of free trade don't concern me. People who don't immunize or who prefer Whole Foods to 'regular' stores don't concern me. Tolerance doesn't concern me. My western civ bible verse is from the sentiments of Voltaire, which were paraphrased by a biographer as: I disapprove of what you say, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it. (or something like that) That evokes tolerance without commanding acceptance.
If modern western civ lived up to its founding, there could be no “hate laws” or “hate speech”.

Not all of modern western civilization so-called is based on the US Constitution. Socialism and all its depredations started in countries considered “the west”.

I was not making the argument it was.
But contained within our own Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights are ideas that HAVE orginiated in the same enlightenment era that gave rise to democracies across western civilization in the late 18th and early 19th century.
No. They do not all share the same views of things like separation of powers, and the specific limited powers our constitution assigns to the three branches of government. We understand those things, in our context, that were meant to preserve our liberties voiced in ideas that came from the enlightment era. That Europeans took different structural forms than we did does not hide some of the philosophical roots we shared in forming our governments beginning two centuries ago.
Even though many just pay lip service today to many founding ideas cannot hide their origins. In fact, the importance of those ideas is significant enough that they need to pay lip service to them, even as they gradully trample on and erode them. In that enterprise the Left has been successful in deconstructing roots and changing orginal meanings to serve their agenda.
They still mouth “free speech” even as they trample all over it with “hate speech” laws. If true free speech was not important, they would not even bother paying lip service to it. They must keep up appearances of faith in western civilization’s many foundational ideas, even as they destroy the ability to live out those ideas.
