Christianity and Yoga: Is it Really Okay?
Urban Faith ^ | Sherrell Moore-Tucker

Did you know that our beloved country has a history of repurposing and repackaging things that we didn’t necessarily discover? Take our beloved Christmas tree for example. Did you know that decorating trees and giving money was a part of worship to various gods during Egyptian times? It is also part of the Germanic pagan solstice tradition.

The exchange of wedding rings did not originate in the church, and various religions worship and practice meditation, prayer, and fasting just like Christians. So should I take my ring off based on the original intent, or stop purchasing Christmas trees and decorations because the Egyptians utilized the tree first? No, I don’t, because I serve a God who can redeem anything, as He is the Creator of all.

The Bible speaks specifically about key elements used in most forms of yoga: meditation, breathing, and movement. For me, Acts 17:18 sums it up: “For in Him we live and move and exist.” So I will put truth up against philosophy any day, as philosophy is simply man’s attempt to understand God, His creations, and purpose. Joshua 1:8 reminds me to meditate on His Word day and night; Genesis 2:7 defines the source of my life: “He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils, and the man became a living person”; and numerous Scriptures speak of our bodily posture toward God. King David had a keen understanding that our outward posture is reflective of what’s going on inside, because God, the originator of the mind-body connection, knows that the way we move can positively or negatively affect the heart and mind...

I agree. The stretches, ect....fine. I’ve though about that since I stopped karate and need something a little gentler as I’ve aged.

Try becoming a Democrat and attending a Unitarian Universalist church

Oh, dear. I was more-or-less raised in the Unitarian Universalist tradition. It left me with a “what is the point” attitude. I haven’t been to a “service” since I was a teenager.

So, you think him wanting fast food to be a sacrament is idiotic? San Francisco liberals HATE all the fast food middle America loves.
You stand with your gay bay friends all you want. 0622 and me will stand by fast food and some good spaghetti.

Being critical of fast food just like a democrat...so who da idiot now?

Of course it’s ok.

One of the yoga mudras is the hands pressed together in a prayerful position.

Basically, yoga is a stretching technique that relaxes the defense mechanisms in the body to facilitate unresolved issues to surface for cleansing...

This is the process to follow Jesus’s 2nd commandment.

What are you going on about? I don't give a rat's a about fast food. Incorporating Hindu practices, just because it looks like just exercise, is not good because God has always been very much against mixing anything pagan into our relationship with Him.

If you're not someone who is a devoted Christian, of course that's your right, but ignorance is not a good reason to contribute to a Christian topic.

Oh give it a break it is a relaxation exercise that’s all. If somebody wants to make a weird cult out of some exercises so what it’s a relaxing form of exercise and relaxation of muscles and has nothing absolutely nothing to do with any religion Pagan or otherwise

Oh yeah?? I walked by the window of a yoga place and I felt very reverent at the creations in there. So put that in your pipe and smoke it.

And those healthy looking women sure were taking good care of their temporal temple (..as Paul admonished us to do in Corinthians) better than some sweathog going back for her 3rd serving of mashed taters and gravy.
Taking care of your own corpus delecti is honoring the gift the lord gave you.

Don’t you even read your Bible?

I was born in a Hindu family, remained a Hindu, but I never miss singing Christmas carols before Christmas. I love every one of them, they are so melodic and fun to sing. I got hooked on those during my bachelor days living in International House in University of Chicago campus. My wife’s parents were devout Lutheran Christians and I never missed going to church with them at Christmas time. I enjoyed the lights and the atmosphere.

I am guessing my belief in my religion of birth is strong enough to participate in joyous activities of other religions without feeling threatened.

Yes I like that pose! I think it all depends on context/teacher. If you are practicing yoga in a Hindu temple...that's one thing. But if you're in a regular class, then it's whatever you make of it and you choose what to put into your mind.

My opinion may change, but that's how I view it now.

It’s yoga, a few silly poses and stretches. It’s about as anti-Christian as wearing those yoga pants and showing female anatomy.

There’s no mind and chant stuff if you don’t want somebody else’s mind enchant stuff.

Christians meditated...and the chants if you want to call it that were usually the Jesus prayer
Why don’t you guys get a grip on your rigidity and judgemental Ness somebody does some exercises to relax and you’re off to satanic criticism.

Somebody repeats a Prayer over and over and you call it a Mid Eastern chant good Lord!

Yogi--The Ivy Three (1960)

I saw a kook who was standing on his head
He flipped his lid like he should have been in bed
I said, "What's this, man?"
He looked at me and said
I'm a Yogi
I'm a Yogi, baby
I'm a Yogi
I'm a Yogi, baby

Hey, Boo-Boo!

And then the cat started strutting on hot coals
He was wearing sneaks, but they were so full of holes
He sang right out from the bottom of his soles
I'm a Yogi
I'm a Yogi, baby
I'm a Yogi
I'm a Yogi, baby

Hey, Boo-Boo!

"Now listen here, baby," the Yogi man said
"It's all a matter of the mind.
Just commune with your innermost being
And baby, you'll be just fine."

He was hip, all right, wasn't he?

So I tried my best to dig my inner me
I walked on coals, my head below my knee
Until at last I heard me say perfectly
I'm a Yogi
I'm a Yogi, baby
I'm a Yogi I'm a Yogi, baby

Hey, Boo-Boo!
Hey, Boo-Boo!
Hey, Boo-Boo!
