Did you know that our beloved country has a history of repurposing and repackaging things that we didnt necessarily discover? Take our beloved Christmas tree for example. Did you know that decorating trees and giving money was a part of worship to various gods during Egyptian times? It is also part of the Germanic pagan solstice tradition.
The exchange of wedding rings did not originate in the church, and various religions worship and practice meditation, prayer, and fasting just like Christians. So should I take my ring off based on the original intent, or stop purchasing Christmas trees and decorations because the Egyptians utilized the tree first? No, I dont, because I serve a God who can redeem anything, as He is the Creator of all.
The Bible speaks specifically about key elements used in most forms of yoga: meditation, breathing, and movement. For me, Acts 17:18 sums it up: For in Him we live and move and exist. So I will put truth up against philosophy any day, as philosophy is simply mans attempt to understand God, His creations, and purpose. Joshua 1:8 reminds me to meditate on His Word day and night; Genesis 2:7 defines the source of my life: He breathed the breath of life into the mans nostrils, and the man became a living person; and numerous Scriptures speak of our bodily posture toward God. King David had a keen understanding that our outward posture is reflective of whats going on inside, because God, the originator of the mind-body connection, knows that the way we move can positively or negatively affect the heart and mind...

“Somebody repeats a Prayer over and over and you call it a Mid Eastern chant good Lord!”
The Bible condemns “vain repetitions”, i.e., repeating a prayer over and over. When a “prayer” is repeated over and over it becomes a chant. Pray from your heart in your own words.
“Good Lord!”
The Bible condemns taking the Lord’s name in vain.
What’s the “Jesus Prayer”? More made-up stuff?
Why not?
I grew up in India and lived there until age 20, and seldom heard anyone talk about yoga. After coming to America is when I found out and learned what yoga is all about. I never have practiced it. Yet my body and mind are in great shape nearing 80 candles.
My 28 s.o. daughter attends Hot Yoga (whatever that is) and loves it. But she does not know the first thing about Hinduism, Hindu Gods or Bhagvad Geeta. So I am guessing her Yoga class is all about physical practice and nothing about religion.
Google the “ Jesus Prayer”...a “christian” who does not know what the Jesus prayer is unbelievable.
Good Lord... this phrase good Lord can also be an exhortation of help a plea not taking the name in vain.
Maybe you can be humble enough to realize that you may just learn some more things about Christianity on this thread and please remember there are people who are not Christians or are having difficulty with their Christianity or their faith and it sure doesn’t help to have Christians be smug and judgemental
Never saw so many judgmental Christians as on this thread wow how very welcoming to the faith
Does not jive with my experience of 20 years growing up in India. My best friends were either Sikh, Christian or Muslim. We hardly discussed religion. Our conversations were about college curriculum or sports or movies or girls.
So the Lord’s Prayer is right out with you, is that right? And Good Lord is an epithet, not a taking the Lord’s name in vain unless the person was really expecting a boon by making the utterance. Jesus Wept!
Absolutely. Yet, she finds energy, comfort, peace, and an ability to engage with the world without reacting impulsively to it. Egads! It teaches people how to relax!
The nay sayers do probably have a point though. After a while, Indian spirituality and practices probably do become less mysterious and threatening. Practitioners are liable to become curious and find out more than is good for their everlastin’ souls about Eastern spirituality. They might even chant sometime. Maybe burn some incense, have some flowers.
Ahhh. The pharasees thread
Well, I'm glad that you had such a positive experience there. The history books write of religious wars. I guess they all lied. Maybe that was before your time when India was one giant country and many didn't want to split it up by religion. Ghandi said that it broke his heart to see India split into religious factions.
Now...who cares? It's a done deal. Ghandi is ancient history.
My husband and I visited India quite a while ago. That's how he got the notion that SOMEONE over there must be worshiping a '56 Chevy.
I used to think that India was filthy...until we visited China. Ugh.
Even in Christian yoga where they go out of their way to incorporate verse into the usual yoga prose
All true.
The best way I lift my caboose is with Weight Watchers and cardio exercise.
To your wife: NAMASTE!
Sorry.
The Lord’s Prayer is a template for how to pray. It wasn’t meant to be chanted. “After this MANNER therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven...”
They are so ignorant, they dont understand the level of their deception. You, as with most of our messed up society, seem to be in the same boat
I am talking about post-independence India. Not about the religious war from many centuries ago.
Just think about this....Do you know how many Muslims live in India today? More than population of Saudi Arabia+Syria+Iraq+UAE+Yemen+Kuwait+ a few more!
Then think about how many Muslim terrorists have originated in India! So why so few Muslim terrorists from India in spite of the huge Muslim population?
Thanks. You confirm the anecdotal experiences told to me by friends that have practiced, or are practicing some type of Yoga - here in the west.
That is why I think that some Christians get unnecessarily concerned about Yoga. They have some idea that it originated in religion in India, but have no idea what its dominant practices have become here in the west. To me it is “nothing burger” - nothing to be concerned about.
“Google the ‘Jesus Prayer’ ... a ‘christian’ who does not know what the Jesus prayer is unbelievable.”
It must denomination specific. Never heard of it my 18 years growing up a parsonage, or my four years in Seminary.
“Good Lord... this phrase good Lord can also be an exhortation of help a plea not taking the name in vain.”
No. See... it IS taking the Lord’s name in vain. We couldn’t even say “gee” or “golly” or similar growing up, as they’re “minced oaths” for Jesus and God.
“it sure doesnt help to have Christians be smug and judgemental”
It sure doesn’t.
Because that class wouldn’t be introducing Hindu spirituality, I wouldn’t have an issue with that class.
