According to this theory, either a comet or asteroid struck Earth during the Pleistocene, triggering an impact winter that saw temperatures plummet around the globe.

I'm sure it's all complicated, but they seem to believe a massive drop in temperature is at least partly why the Ice Age ended. [shrug] Settled science, I suppose.

There are two ideas that get tossed around. First, the comet/meteor hit (into the glacier area of North America...the eastern coastal region). The discussion here is that a rapid melt occurred, feeding into the Atlantic and triggering a massive change in currents and weather. Note also...water levels rose over a week or two, by 200 to 300 feet across the globe, to where they are today.

The second idea goes to the idea of some kind of sun eruption (plasma burst) and that the rapid heat had some kind of quick reaction on the North American glacier. Again, a melt-off and a rise in water levels.

Note, there is another odd story out there on the science charts today...talking about mammoth elephants that passed away on Wrangel Island (100 miles north of Siberia)....years and years after the American glacier period ended. Now, you go and look at Wrangel Island. It’s maybe 25 by 45 miles in size. How’d the mammoths get there? You’d have to think prior to the water level occurring, Wrangel was part of the northern Siberian coastal area (thus not an island). But this begs questions about how they survived there, and what they ate.
