Detroit Metropolitan Airport Latest to Receive Facial Recognition Technology

U.S. Customs and Border Patrol’s facial recognition technology program has now arrived at Detroit’s international airport. Known as ‘Simplified Arrival,’ CBP’s biometric-based system matches the faces of arriving international travelers at Detroit Metropolitan Airport against the images contained in their travel documents, enabling the agency to quickly verify their identities. Detroit also joins a growing list of top US airports using the Simplified Arrivals system, where at least 20 of them will offer the facial recognition technology to speed through the Customs process by the end of 2020.

Systems like Simplified Arrivals and its brother facial recognition program, Biometric Exit – which photographs departing international travelers at their departure gates – are currently voluntary for US citizens. CBP says that, at present, Americans who don’t wish to be photographed when arriving into or departing from the country can request alternative means of processing. Facial recognition technology can reduce the time needed to verify an international traveler’s identity to just two seconds or less.

....

The security agency notes that all photographs taken of arriving travelers are stored in a secure cloud-based environment and are deleted within 12 hours. Long-term storage of such images on government-controlled servers had been of concern to civil liberties advocates, and the speedy deletion of them plays a big role in ensuring travelers’ privacy.

....

According to the Department of Homeland Security’s “Fiscal Year 2018 Entry/Exit Overstay Report,” DHS expects to use facial recognition programs on 97 percent of departing international passengers by mid-2023. Barring any major issues, arriving passengers can expect to see Simplified Arrivals or similar technology at all US international airport Customs stations within the next few years as well.

Several things: 1) I just went through DTW Customs and used Simplified Arrivals. It was blindingly fast... for DTW. 2) They're saying they delete the photos in 12 hours or less. Who ensures they do that, and who watches the the watchers? Other watchers? Well, who watches them? 3) Ninety-seven percent of "departing international travelers will be processed through facial recognition by mid-2023. I call that fairly ambitious for the government.

Lastly; most people aren't really all that torqued about facial recognition for security purposes, according to several recent studies, surveys and news reports. Except for people like Rancida Tlaib, that is. ;-)

We are heading there.

It will probably be safer for us in the long run instead of using driver’s licenses/pass ports and keying in pass words.

Not sure. But I AM sure that she hates Simplified Arrivals and Biometric Exit just as much as she hates that Detroit facial recognition program that she bitched at the DPD chief about (he got so mad at her, he called her a racist).

She’s a piece of work, and thank G-d she’s not my Congresscritter (mine isn’t much better, she being Debbie, the wife of dead Congresscritter Dingell ;-).

They thought the software had been perfected until Ralph Northam went by and it identified him as Al Jolson.

“Time to buy stock in “Groucho Glasses”.”

I heard that they tested it on pictures of Congresspersons and US Senators and that they kept being identified as wanted criminals and terrorists and such. I’d say that’s about right. ;-)

“Have they hired any whites?”

In Detroit? C’mon. ;-)

I was born and raised in Southwest Detroit way back in the day, before I went in the military for a quarter-century. In my personal opinion, the city began its death dive as soon as Coleman Young was elected mayor in ‘74. The ‘67 riots, which I vividly remember, began the dive but Motown could have, and would have, recovered — though not to its former glory, admittedly — with a smarter and less divisive mayor.

Even its residents realize this nowadays, as they elected Mike Duggan to try to clean up after Young and Kwame Kilpatrick (Archer and Bing were great guys but largely ineffective... Young and Kilpatrick were poison).

I heard it thought Justin Trudeau was actually Michael Jackson. ;-)

Delta, at least for international flights, is also using face recognition as a boarding pass.

I objected to looking into the camera and had a boarding pass in hand, they didn’t argue. I asked from where do they get the data? They answered, “from your passport”.

Where did I authorize the U.S. government to share my biometrics with a private company?

That is preposterous. Michael Jackson was way too light skinned.
