Making billions Manhattan real estate, inventing a television concept and pulling in 25 million viewers every week for 14 seasons, devising a concept of levering celebrity, through being a boxing and wrestling impresario, a tabloid star and a reality TV icon, and then changing party affiliations seven times in 13 years and using social media to end-run the national press, seizing control of one of the great political parties and gaming the electoral system into the White House, he achieved more prior to his inauguration than any of the 43 preceding U.S. presidents except Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Grant, Eisenhower, and possibly Hoover.
He never sought or held a public office or high military command and only the sixth to win the office with fewer votes than his chief opponent. This wasnt luck; it was ambitious calculation and flawless execution.
Successful American presidents are never Mr. Nice Guy, though its a bonus when, like Franklin D. Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan, they act the part. This Ukraine nonsense is a fraudulent desperation shot by the Democrats and will blow up in their faces. Donald Trump is probably the most successful and powerful person in the world and he will steamroller this rag-tag of kooks and retreads desultorily arrayed against him.
The U.S. system periodically crushes one of its parties like a waffle. FDR in 1936, Lyndon Johnson in 1964, Richard Nixon in 1972, Ronald Reagan in 1984, all won by over 20 points. The Globe and Mail can dream on like Johnny Cashs Teenage Queen, but Trump will gain a victory on that scale next year, and like the presidents just mentioned, he will have earned it. Those who resurrect the fortunes of great nations are not groomed and sent out by casting studios, or subject to confirmation by for

I agree with him. A lot of people who were Trump skeptical have become strong Trump supporters. Maybe not on every single issue, but firm supporters.
You just described me.
It was clear to the left that Richard Nixon’s victory in 1972 could have realigned American politics. Many blue collar unions supported him and helped him carry New York.
He had to be stopped by any means necessary.
I am going to volunteer for the first time in my life. And I am going donate to a freakin billionaire. Whatever it takes
The only way the Rat wins is through massive voter fraud.
I was skeptical about Trump in the beginning as well, I voted for him because I sure as hell didnt want the Hildebeast. PDJT has really delivered for us! Im very impressed with what he has accomplished.
By the time Trump announced in 2015 I was already a strong supporter of him. My support for him has only grown since then. And I add my immense gratitude for all he has done for us. I wish he would have run in 1996. (If you watch an interview with him at the Republican convention in 1988 you see why I mention 1996.)
Mueller ended up indicting some pimple-faced Russians. They got nuthin'.
PING. Conrad Black is back with an interesting historical look at America — from a Canuck’s perspective.
No more supporting of National Review please, Mr. Black.
They will definitely do that. Pray the evil ones dont succeed.
You have my admiration.
Always enjoy reading ol’ Conrad. Thanks for posting.
They’ll do everything they can to win. Our side had better get out and vote and there are more and more new Trump supporters who will vote for him.
They are pure evil and must be stopped.
Overall, I’ve been very pleased. That doesn’t mean I agree with him on every issue, but if I want someone who agrees with me on every issue, I’ll vote for myself.
It helped that effort that his WH (for whatever reason) perpetratred the Watergate break-in, and that he, after finding out about it, authorized and coordinated obstruction of justice in the form of payoffs to keep those arrested quiet.
If you have enemies like Nixon had, you need to be squeaky-clean. Nixon wasn’t.
Trump, however, IS.
Much as I appreciate the sentiment, Conrad is being too clever by half. In the best case scenario I cannot see the President adding more than 1 or 2 states to his 2016 haul.
Which will hardly approach the scale of the past described landslides.
Demographically such landslides are no longer possible because the legions of the takers, amply padded by the legions of the brainwashed products of our universities, now make up at least 50% (if not more) of the electorate.
Thankfully they are too heavily concentrated on the coasts at the moment, so POTUS has a path to reelection that closely mirrors the one from 2016.
Regardless, those of you under the age of 30 (40?) can expect to live long enough to enjoy the dubious fruits of an Orwellian “Socialist paradise”.
As an immigrant from one of the former such ‘paradises’ I do not envy you...
To say they are pure evil, is an understatement of Biblical proportions. 👍
All of the democrat congresscritters and Presidential candidates are pandering to the far left-wing of the democrat base. I suspect that many of them know, but will never admit, that they are going to lose BIGLY in the 2020 elections.
What most of the far left-wing democrats cannot seem to grasp is that the 2020 election will not be won or lost by firing up the far left base. The election will be decided by all of those middle class and blue collar voters in flyover country who now have jobs and can feed their families without food stamps for the first time in years. This includes a lot of black and hispanic voters who have never voted for anyone but democrats before but now see unemployment among blacks and hispanics at the lowest levels in at least 50 years.
Just like in 2016 but magnified by 10, they will never see the tidal wave coming until it crashes over them.
