No idea. I heard the Vatican thing had to do with real estate, but that could always be just cover.
The Vatican is it’s own State/country so all the activity has nothing to do with Italy other then the fact it is located there. I’m interested that State was visiting though because there is limited diplomatic or treaty activity that would be beneficial for the U.S. unless it is information or records related.

The first time I looked at this my first thought on the books at the top left is that they reminded me of pictures of the books from the Vatican Archives.
