3 Navy sailors assigned to USS George H.W. Bush kill themselves in a week

Three Navy sailors assigned to the USS George H.W. Bush aircraft carrier killed themselves last week in separate incidents, officials said Monday.

The commanding officer of the carrier, which is docked at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Virginia, announced the deaths in a post on the ship’s Facebook page Monday.

“It is with a heavy heart that I can confirm the loss of three Sailors last week in separate, unrelated incidents from apparent suicide. My heart is broken,” Capt. Sean Bailey wrote in the announcement.

None of the deaths occurred on the carrier, which is docked at the shipyard for repairs, Navy Times reported.

The crew members who killed themselves last week are the third, fourth and fifth sailors assigned to the ship to commit suicide in a two-year period, Bailey added in his statement.

Bailey urged sailors on the carrier to come forward with suggestions on how to put an end to the string of suicides.

“We need All Hands to engage by bringing forward your suggestions and ideas for how we can work together to prevent another suicide,” he wrote in the post, adding: “I want to reiterate that there is never any stigma or repercussion from seeking help.”

I looked it up. The suicide rate is 14.7 per 100,000. For the crew of 5,000 there should be .7 suicides per year. Their rate is very high. The highest rates are in middle aged white men, which are 69% of the total.

The article’s authors really let us down by not providing any details. What were their ages and races? Where drugs found in their systems? Did they have anything to do with the Clintons?

AO’s are ship’s company, quite a big group of them too. They take care of the weapon spaces and weapons elevators. At least they did when I was in.

Knew someone who served on that ship.

Told someone she was going to throw herself off the flight deck. Thankfully received the help she needed.

These are tragic deaths, but the Navy's suicide rate (per 100,000) is less than the demographic-(age-sex)-adjusted civilian rate: "Last year, the Navy recorded 68 active duty suicides — about 20.7 per 100,000 people. For comparison, officials point to the most recently available and demographically adjusted civilian rate from 2016, which lists 26.8 suicides per 100,000 people." https://www.navytimes.com/news/your-navy/2019/09/24/investigators-probing-four-suicides-involving-carrier-crew/

28 months in the yards would suck. Lots of folks go TAD, either to some suck ass detail in the yards or sent to other ships. Lots of equipment is torn up for months or in this case years at a time and then at the end of the yard period, a shitload of work once things come back together. Portsmouth isn’t exactly a great place to be but I preferred that to Newport News.

We had a CHENG (Chief Engineer) on the Coral Sea, that SOB thought he was the CO. Bastard was in the middle of having his own melt down and took on Captain Queeg’s personality. The CO finally reeled him in.

Wow. Hate to be the first to say it, but does this ship have any kind of reputation for being cursed or haunted? If I were the ship's chaplain, I'd be exorcising the hell out of this ship (literally). It couldn't hurt.

Alternatively, could there be any gasses or other materials specific to this ship that could be leaking and causing depression and mood changes? It's been known to happen in buildings.

Is Captain Bligh in command of that ship?

Shipyard periods are a terrible time to be assigned to a ship. All that noise and dirt and long hours. No fun. Ships and sailors belong at sea.

Three suicides in a week???

Color me suspicious but I think it needs some very serious looking into.

I find that far too coincidental.

The number and closeness in time may indicate a connection. I hope not.

I predict the captain of the ship will be relieved of duty and replaced.

When I was on active duty in the Air Force, stationed in New Mexico at Holloman AFB, in the 49th Tactical Fighter Wing, six airmen committed suicide in a one year period.

The Wing Commander of the base, a one star general, was fired for failure to uphold morale and safety of the troops.

Of course, the suicides weren't his fault personally but he was responsible for the overall morale of the troops under his command and his superiors saw the suicides as a failure in that area.

It's not that unusual to have troops kill themselves. The law of averages would account for some suicides just by the numbers. A Navy aircraft carrier is a big ship. Lots of sailors on board. Out to sea for extended periods of time. They are usually young, miss their families and or girlfriends and can't see any other way out.

“It is with a heavy heart that I can confirm the loss of three Sailors last week in separate, unrelated incidents from apparent suicide.

When something like this happens, my first thought is that they were homosexuals. Homosexuals kill themselves at very high rates compared to the normal portion of the population.

This is very sad. But I am curious as to their back stories. Any of them LGBT?

Exactly my first thought. These LGBT people who keep trying to convince actual normal people that they too are normal, kill themselves at rates of 40 to 50%.

Way way way beyond the average for people who have normal sexuality.

“Shipyard periods are a terrible time to be assigned to a ship. All that noise and dirt and long hours. No fun. Ships and sailors belong at sea.”

Also, the lowest bidder usually did the yard work, and they cut the corners/eliminated a lot of things that made it easier to live on a ship.
