The unintended consequence of widespread birth control — on individuals, families and society — cannot be denied.

Loneliness has become an “epidemic” in the world today, says scholar Mary Eberstadt, author of the 2013 book “Adam and Eve After the Pill."

“Fifty years after the embrace of the pill — undeniably, because of the embrace of the pill — loneliness is spreading across the materially better-off countries of the planet."

She expands on the themes of her new article, describing the “prophetic power” of “Humanae Vitae” (“On Human Life”), Pope Paul VI’s 1968 encyclical letter on birth control and married love...Paul VI’s encyclical foresaw what almost no one back then would have predicted: that the world after the sexual revolution would be rife with unprecedented problems, among them a general coarsening of standards, a coercive use of reproductive technologies by governments and a marked lowering of respect for women.

Eberstadt: Fifty years ago, there was a lot of understandable confusion about what the revolution would bring. The difference between 1968 and today is that we can no longer pretend the pro-revolution optimists were right. There are too many data points demonstrating otherwise.

Unprecedented rates of divorce, single parenthood and semi-orphaned children during the past half-century torpedo any case that the Pill helped marriage.

Lopez: How did the sexual revolution license predation and democratize sexual harassment?

Eberstadt: There have always been predatory men. But the Pill has acted as a game changer on their reach, expanding it exponentially. Both the scandals of recent months and the “#Me Too” movement itself are consequences of the revolution itself...

When I met my beautiful bride-to-be (in a bar), and got to know of her lack of Christian upbringing, I never imagined that I would hear say: “I don’t believe in the pill. It’s just another way to degrade, what is supposed to be special between a man and wife.” I had a Christian upbringing; strong enough to resist the urge (even in the most irresistable situations that I would put myself in). But I fell in love with her after the first date, and would have done anything she asked. She said we wait.

11 months later we married, and that first night was well worth the wait. We met 42 ago this coming friday night. The song, “Some Enchanted Evening” by Bing Crosby, really describes the moment quite well.

I’m so glad my girl said no to the pill, and to guys looking for action.

Ah, a "runner" also known as a "running board." I imagine they were quite useful when streets didn't have kerbs/curbs and paved sidewalks, the curb, I believe, has taken over some of the function of the running board, as it provides a stepping stool to get into the car.

Well, it sure would be nice if ONE TIME this was issue was discussed when we weren't leading up to a Presidential election.

I suspect the ‘timing’ of this debate was once again created by democrats who play our side for fools. But have at it...

What's next? Are you going to debate the ethics of using a condom? Because that's exactly the same issue... it stops a birth that might have been. How about debating whether women have the right to say 'no' during their 'time' ... that also prevents a possible birth. How many angles can dance on the head of a pin?

There are other causes of breast cancer including a genetic predisposition. I also know of several women who developed breast cancer from doing invitro fertilization and getting those hormone shots.

We have liberal nuts telling young people they should forgo having children ‘to save the earth’... Those are the people and ideas we have to fight at this time. Going back to an earlier time sidelines our ideas and values. Let's go for the long run - winning on the larger issue - - encouraging families and children and Christian values..in an effective way.

Angelus News seems to be some type of Roman Catholic publication (Correct me if I am wrong). Nothing seems political nor a push by any Republican banning “the pill” , just a P(r)SA. I think outlets warning on the reprocussions are OK, apparently some posters are losing their minds over exposing the obvious “carrot on the stick”/Pied Piper of hormonal Xanadu.
