"Ad Astra", Brad Pitt Space Movie: Have Any Freepers Seen it...?

Have any Freepers seen this film?

Can you talk about if you liked it, and if so, why..?

For this type of thing I rely on Freepers.

Brad Pitt is selected for a space mission that apparently involves his long last father.

The Expanse is terrific. Amos is the best tough guy in the business.

I’m going to see it later this evening. I kind of like slow paced, contemplative space movies.

I am not a mad Sci Fi fan, but I wanted to see this movie because it was touted to have some really good Sci Fi to it. WRONG!

I just finished reading a Sci Fi book that discussed space elevators, and living out in space and building new living habitats that blows this movie away!

You want to read about realism in building and living in space go read a book by the name of Star of Epiphany, some of the best Sci Fi I have ever read!

Just got back from the theater and my verdict is “meh”. It’s dark, sad, fairly violent, and scientifically unbelievable to the point of being corny in parts. Its main problem is a basic one, namely that the story’s just not very interesting.

Went to see it last night. I’d give it a definite 2.5 out of 5 stars. It more or less kept my interest, although there were more than one “WTF” moments, mostly surrounding Pitt and his limitless knowledge of everything involved with a mission so secret that he was told by his “handler” that he was on a need to know basis.

I won’t go into details, but the one that got me was when he snuck on board a ship heading to see daddy, managed to get the rest of the crew killed, yet still knew all of the special codes required to communicate with space control, fly the ship like a seasoned captain, AND carry out the mission right down to the launch codes required to complete the deed.

The soundtrack was far more overwhelming than necessary. It was, at times, difficult to hear the sparse conversations over the moody “musical” themes playing. This was in a normal Dolby Atmos audio setup. I shudder to think what it would have sounded like in XD or IMAX.

If you can manage to see it as part of a bargain matinee, or a super special matinee price, it might be worth your time. Otherwise, I’d wait 6 months until it shows up on a cable movie station.

Watched it online a couple of nights ago. It reminded me of 2001 Space Oddessy without the cool music and rouge computer.

Donald Sutherland and Tommy Lee Jones both played roles suitable to their ages.

The multiple psychological tests were annoying.

On a positive note there was no sex and the violence wan’t gratuitous.

I was mildly disappointed. Way too much voice over telling the audience exactly what was going on (as opposed to say 2001) and the third act was a huge letdown. It plays out exactly the way they had been telling you it would play out from the start. That “Let me Go” business was eye-rolling-ly heavy handed.

“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” was a big favorite on here.

It was really more Apocalypse Now than 2001. Sure it had good space effects and a lot of quiet like 2001, but it was totally a trip up crazy river.

His “Ford v Ferrari” is out in November. That’s the one to see. He plays the young Carrol Shelby.

It was a combination of the two. James Gray said as much. Good sources to draw from by all means! But the dime store Freud stuff was heavy handed to say the least.

Just like AN, really. I’m pretty good at letting heavy handed go, I know a lot of the audience needs their nose led, so long as it’s feeling natural. And once you get to know how nuts his dad went, all that other stuff like the constant evals and the happy pills makes sense. There’s a lot of “let’s not let this happen again”.

See, that’s why I don’t worry about over explaining. Rule of 3s exists for a reason, the masses are slow.
