JIMMY PAGE: Why LED ZEPPELIN Was The Best Band In The World
Blabbermouth ^ | September 19, 2019 | N/A

Jimmy Page was interviewed for a cover story in the latest issue of Uncut, where he talks about the potential of a LED ZEPPELIN film, career regrets (or not), and carrying on the legacy of ZEPPELIN as the best band in the world.

Speaking to writer Michael Bonner about why he feels no other bands could come close to LED ZEPPELIN, Page said: "It's really hard to say something like that and not sound conceited, but over the years, a lot of other musicians have told me they thought we were the best. I'm not talking about record sales or concert attendance, although I think we can hold our own with anyone. What I mean is: when you talk about a band as a collaborative musical unit, we were the best. I am not talking about one or two genius songwriters, and everyone else tagging along. I am talking about a collection of musicians who are each at the top of their craft in their own right. In LED ZEPPELIN, we were exactly that."

Elaborating on why he previously told interviewer Charlie Rose in 2012 that LED ZEPPELIN was the best band in the world while Robert Plant demurred, Page said: "If you are a young musician and you want to hear how a band works well together, then we're a pretty good blueprint. John [Paul Jones] and me. Robert and me. John Paul Jones and John Bonham. Every combination of the quartet could bring something special. Robert probably said, 'Oh, well, there were a lot of great bands,' to that interviewer because that is the gentlemanly reply. And I agree with him...But when you are talking about rock 'n' roll alchemy, I had to say what I thought. We were the best."

Best band? Hardly. The Who,in their early days, were better. Ditto the Stones. The Beatles in their middle years (Rubber Soul and Revolver) were also better.

Zappa was a genius, he’s on a whole ‘nother level (Hendrix too imho).

But, for HARD rock, I go with Zepplin, always thought so.

Not my favorite, although Led Zeppelin 4 was very good (even though I burnt out on “Stairway to Heaven” a long time ago. I always thought Jimmy Page was overrated as a guitarist, but I’ve never played so I’m sure not the best judge.

“Physical Graffiti” was waaayy overrated. I think every time I hear a song from the bloated album nowadays I change the station, usually to NPR for classical music.

Clearly Clutch is the greatest band in history.

I don’t know about the best, but if I could go back in time to see any band play my choice would be Zeppelin.

If it’s going to be best band then you would have to include Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, The Dorsey Brothers and countless others as part of the competition. Led Zeppelin might be up there but definitely not number 1.

Arguably, Cream was the best for the short time they were around.

I have a bootleg of Zeppelin at the Fillmore West in Jan 1969, before their first album came out. It is a smoking hot performance. Similarly, their Royal Albert Hall on video circa 1970 is breathtaking. But shortly thereafter, their live act went into a ditch. Achilles Last Stand is a masterpiece but net-net, I’d pick Deep Purple over Zep for hard rock.

Yep, that was music? More like “music to get stoned to.”

I like Zeppelin, but they were sloppy even on record, they poached a lot without giving credit (not a unique sin in rock), and their output is some of the most dated of the ‘70s. I was listening to Van Halen I today and it still sounds fresh and vital. Presence, say, is very ponderous now.

And, no, I’m not saying VH is the better band.

Don’t forget Stan Kenton...he’s my Grand Prize winner in that genre. Heavy Metal before metal was a genre.

Forgot to mention “Roger The Engineer”.At that moment,at least, even the Yardbird were better than Zepplin ever was.

There were a number of bands that for that brief shining moment were the best.

The Doors were. The collaboration that Page mentions, they had it. Chicago for its first three LPs was. For a brief period, I would say the same for the Faces.

And so on. Music is such an abstract of individual’s taste. And it is a snapshot in time. A snapshot that we think at the time will just go on and on.

Depends on what you mean by the best. I like the Beatles the best by a long shot. But no other white band could steel from black blues men and make it better, including the Stones, than LZ.
