Weeks shy of his 95th birthday, former President Jimmy Carter said Tuesday he doesnt believe he could have managed the most powerful office in the world at 80 years old.
Carter, who earlier this year became the longest lived chief executive in American history, didnt tie his comments to any of his fellow Democrats running for president, but two leading 2020 candidates, Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders, would turn 80 during their terms if elected.
Biden is 76. Sanders is 78.
I hope theres an age limit, Carter said with a laugh as he answered audience questions at his annual report at the Carter Center in Atlanta. If I were just 80 years old, if I was 15 years younger, I dont believe I could undertake the duties I experienced when I was president.
Carters remarks came in response to a jovial inquiry about whether he had considered running in 2020 since hes still constitutionally allowed another term. The 39th president left office in 1981 at the age of 56 after losing his reelection bid to Ronald Reagan, who served two terms and left office as the oldest sitting president in history, at 77.
Either Biden or Sanders would be older upon their inauguration than Reagan was on his final day in the Oval Office. At 73, President Donald Trump is a record-setter, as well. He eclipsed Reagans mark as the oldest newly elected president in history and would become the oldest president to be reelected, as well.

As far as the term “moderate” goes, what is it?
Carter seems far left to me, even back during his presidency.
Jimmah Carter is the worst ex-President we have ever known. He has undermined our foreign policy in the Middle East out of sheer spite whenever a Republican is Commander in Chief.
He hates the state of Israel and makes no secret of his pro-Pallie views.
As Prez, he gave us the`malaise speech’ and other lectures on civic morality, told us to get over “our inordinate fear of communism”, jerked the rug from under the Shah of Iran and gave us the mullahs from that day till the present, and has since behaved as a sanctimonious morally arrogant prig wagging a scolding finger.
I have never hated Obama; I hate what he did to this country. But Carter left office with a huge chip on his shoulder and has been getting even with the `ignorant American electorate’ ever since.
F’him!
It should be remembered, as an axiom of eternal truth in politics, that whatever power in any government is independent is absolute also. When it comes to ideology, independent is a canard.
Thomas Jefferson
This may be obvious to everyone who lived through the Carter administration but Jimmy Carter wasn’t able to handle the presidency when he was in his early fifties.
“Well, for starters hes very pro Arab and anti Jew/Israel.”
No doubt.
And it’s a glaring difference from Trump.
Where to begin...
“The Islamic Republic of Iran is a danger to the entire world, no matter who wants to deny that.”
Absolute truth.
We did a regime change in the wrong IR(AQ).
Real Politik argues we should have destroyed Iran instead.
But who knew that in 1979? Our emerging enemies then (besides the Soviets) were the Saudis and OPEC.
Everyone hated Iran and the Mullahs for decades since. They are clearly an enormous threat to peace and security.
But who knew they would have a viable nuke program, on the verge or breakout, and modern missiles to deliver them?
He couldnt have done it at 40.
...
The press made excuses for him, saying the job had become too complicated.
Reagan proved them wrong.
>>Carter cowered under OPEC, set the national speed limit at 55 mph, talked about limits, wore sweaters in the oval office to set the tone, and created miles long gasoline lines.
You left out stagflation, double digit mortgage interest rates, gutting the navy, and abandoning the hostages in Tehran.
Carter was such a colossal, epic failure that it’s difficult to enumerate all of his mistakes...
The right people knew that as far back as 1948. The Islamists even adopted national socialism as one of their tenets.
or 53.
or 54.
or...
Well now you are making a positive suggestion.
Seriously, while we can't do that, we have pissed away opportunities to hurt the spread of Islam in a serious way. Instead the west has encouraged its spread. Laying the groundwork for the future deaths of many innocent westerners.
We can't "kill each and every one of them" but the reality is that in order to survive as a culture, we will at some point be forced to kill a lot of them.
Not being on constant offense against Islam is tantamount to surrendering.
As far as the term moderate goes, what is it?
He never went full Commie.
He didnt manage it when he was president. Why would anyone think he could,do it at 80?
Well yeah, he couldn’t handle it at the age when he was President, 53 to 56.
My house was built in 1978 using 100 percent American stuff and labor.
Jimmy should stick to housing and peanuts.
“we will at some point be forced to kill a lot of them.”
At least until they tire of dying.
It’s how we handled Japan and Germany.
It is impossible, of course, to carry out all of these measures at once. But one will always bring others in its wake. Once the first radical attack on private property has been launched, the proletariat will find itself forced to go ever further, to concentrate increasingly in the hands of the state all capital, all agriculture, all transport, all trade. All the foregoing measures are directed to this end; and they will become practicable and feasible, capable of producing their centralizing effects to precisely the degree that the proletariat, through its labor, multiplies the countrys productive forces. No leftist goes full Commie right away. The amount of damage done by any one such person, however, indicates what ideology they support.
Finally, when all capital, all production, all exchange have been brought together in the hands of the nation, private property will disappear of its own accord, money will become superfluous, and production will so expand and man so change that society will be able to slough off whatever of its old economic habits may remain.
The Principles of Communism
Jimmy, you couldn’t manage it at whatever age you were when you were in office.
